Stop at the viewpoint along the main road just past the airport. The wind was howling up here. The drive, dont walk down the gravel road. This will save you considerable time and it is nothing special. A large parking lot is at the end. Take the main path, not the first branch off. It was a windy misty day so we didn’t want to do the whole hike. We walked about fifteen minutes around the side of the cliff. Gorgeous rock face. Excellent paved path. We stopped when we got a view of the town below. Pretty amazing to think that there is no road to the town, at least not that i could find. I cant imagine having to walk this path all the time if you live there. But it is a beautiful walk.

The route is easy-medium level of complexity. You first have to go down the cliff, observing spectacular views of the ocean and then to walk through small and lovely village located right above the stony beach. We met donkeys and horses on the way. The only drawback is that after you finish the route you must go back, while the back road can only be done by climbing up the hill.

This was a great hike, though without the information provided in the two previous reviews, I might not have done it. The nice people in the tourist office can provide you with the bus schedules and hiking map. The key I think is to make sure you get off the bus at the lookout spot. From there, it is a nice flat walk through some farms, until you turn left and descend. I agree, don’t follow the first cutoff to the left.

The hike down is steep at times, but the path, dirt and stone, is good. Don’t expect to see anyone else on the trail except for the odd local person on their horse, whose poop you may need to avoid ...the horse’s. The views of the cliffs, the small town at the bottom, the cows and the Atlantic are wonderful.

Getting down is fairly quick. Coming back up is a workout, but there are lots of spots to rest. Take your own water, and consider a hat and sunscreen.

I took the 905 but out of Ponta Delgada and was back in town just after noon. There are more returning buses from Relva than most places, giving you more flexibility.

Enjoy!

After wonderful hikes to Sete Cidades and to Lagoa do Fogo, we weren't expecting anything too spectacular from this hike, but it really surprised us. There's a viewpoint at the start of the hike that's not difficult to find; it's called Miradouro da Fonte da Rocha, and our Garmin GPS recognized it and gave us turn-by-turn directions. There's a small parking area and a tiny store that sells souvenirs, water, beer, etc. (You can drive up the dirt road where the trail starts and park further up if you want--it takes about 10 minutes off your hike but you might miss the donkey in the field.) The trail is not confusing--you just follow it straight, first along the cliffs (with spectacular views of the sea from a very high point, and lava cliffs rising up on your right with cacti growing on them). The trail begins to descend, leveling at some points and then descending steeply for more than half the hike. The path, which is a donkey trail, has been paved with round stones so it's not treacherous but tough on the leg muscles. The trail passes houses with little farms and gardens--fabulous photo opps--and reaches something like a hamlet with a tiny square and a fountain. Just keep going--eventually you'll come to the end, by the shore, which consists of thousands of rocks the size of watermelons and mostly round, quite an interesting sight. The return ascent is demanding because you've come down so steeply, but take your time and rest along the way (bring water). One side note: soon after starting the hike, you'll see a diversion downward (it's marked on the trail map). You can do this at the start or at the end of the main hike. I'd recommend making up your mind after you've hiked the main part, because the diversion goes down about 1000 feet and you then need to come back up, and after the ascent on the main hike you may not be up to it. Also, at the top of the hike (before you've reached the little store again) is a lookout with two stone picnic tables and benches--it makes an ideal place to have lunch, either before or after your hike. The guides say this hike takes 3 hours; it took us 2 but we skipped the diversion at the start.

Very nice and easy 5 KM trek along the shore. From Ponta Delgarda just take a bus No.200 (also 205,206,207) to the trial head. Which starts at the end of the village next to view point where is a small farm road. Apart from stunning view you will come across old houses, vineyards. And also you can being met by donkeys, these animals are a mean of transportation for materials and basic stuff. This place has micro climate good for farming and wine production.
To get back you have return the same way.
As the trail is remote take enough water and some snack. You can have a rest at some designed area along the trail.

Wonderful hike, about 2.5 hours. Some very steep areas so be aware of this. The footing is good as the steep area is paved.
Interesting looking little houses along the walk. A few burros in the yards as apparently they are used to haul supplies to the area. A few yards with small vineyards.
The walk is along the cliff wall which is another interesting aspect of the hike.

Vorweg.
