Keith, our docent, kept us regaled for almost an hour with stories. We'd ask a question, he'd tell 6 more stories. The building is full of local history, but Keith has even more.

This museum is a delightful little place opened in 1999. 4 rooms of a century-old former home display permanent and seasonal exhibits dedicated to the history, people, and culture of Greenville, Illinois and Bond County. In the front parlor, learn about Lincoln's visit to the city and admire a box piano and small wood burning stove associated with Almira College and Greenville College. In the east room, find displays on the city's industry and business (mines, gloves, steel balls, railroad, scoreboards, autos, post office) and an early X-ray machine. Plus rotating exhibits honor the NSDAR, War of 1812, Hill's Fort, a featured Bond County veteran, advertising pieces, architecture examples, and other recent acquisitions. In the west room, explore all things Civil War such as maps, weapons, letters home, tin types, a field desk, and bullets found stuck in trees decades after the conflict. The back room houses a scale model of the Pet Milk Factory once bustling in Greenville producing evaporated and condensed milk, diet drinks, and multitudes of other products. Outside on the grounds you can see decommissioned grade school bells and mill stones.
Handicapped accessible with a ramp (in the rear under the carport) and everything is on the main floor.
The museum is free but donations are appreciated. Sign the guestbook and purchase a history book, vintage postcard, or surplus Greenville Bicentennial merchandise (the city turned 200 in 2015!). The building can accommodate groups of up to 20 or 30 comfortably if you spread out into all the rooms. Call ahead a few days to schedule a guided tour from one of the extremely knowledgeable Historical Society members.
