Quiet park, not many visitors. Half of hike was other paths, then main trail, mostly by accident. Cell service and Maps app helped reorientation to main path. Main path is heavy sand, so more strenuous to hike.

Look down! Animal tracks/prints abound! Helped me locate wildlife. Saw deer, and a few birds, but not other animals.

The trails are wide and open, making this park a better choice for overcast days. As others have mentioned, it is sandy and appropriate footwear matters. A real plus is the peace and quiet here.

Wife and I did a nice hike. It is very sandy so you will really get a workout. There are some slight hills. Bring water it will get pretty warm. Lots to see. We did 4.2 miles.
The maps at located in the mailbox at marker #2 we saw half a dozen scrub jays. Lots of other animal tracks in the sand. The statue along the route is a nice tribute to the parks namesake

This park has a lot of trails for hiking and horseback riding. No ATV's or motorized vehicles allowed, so a great place for riding, except...there is very little cover from trees on the trails, so it's extremely hot. The sand is typical sugar sand. It's deep and hard on the horses in some spots. If you take it easy and go during the winter, it really is nice trail...just don't do it in the summer. Also, usually see deer, snakes, and lot of turkey, so it's great for a wildlife experience!

Prima park. Groot met veel natuur. Wildlife bestaat vooral uit herten en wilde kalkoenen. Helaas veel zandpaden en heuvelachtig, zware omstandigheden. Zeker een must!

This State park provides striking hiking trails through some exceptionally rare Floridian scrub habitats. There are NO facilities here, other than the car park and portable style toilet adjacent, so DO come fully prepared! There is little or no shade so it can get very hot indeed... water is a must bring item along with suitable footwear and clothing. The going underfoot can be hard, as there's lots of soft sand paths, but hey, is it all worth it? You bet! As here you can enjoy a very rare glimpse of an unspoilt and untouched Florida that is utterly peaceful and quite unique.
Before you attempt the hiking trails DO read all the advice notes on the website and you'll have a great and safe time.

This lovely little State preserve is just down the road from where we live, so it's a quick drive for a walk in the wild. The preserve is open to horseback and walkers, so watch where you step!! The trails are easy to follow, but are very sandy, so it's a good workout in the sand. Our three granddaughters enjoy the hikes because Grandfather always makes a contest out of finding things or trying to figure out what something is or who can see the first this or that. Be sure to take water and watch out for snakes and fire ants!!

The terrain is white sand, which is difficult. Take it slow and it will be fine. Even in early July there are quite a few wildflowers blooming. The port-o-potty was well stocked without any odors (amazing in Florida in the heat). There is a covered picnic area at the parking lot with 2 tables. Maps are available after you start hiking in a mailbox along the trail. Make sure you take water, sun protection and insect repellent. The horseflies were around during my hike.

My sister and I spent a couple of weeks trying to locate the elusive FL Scrub Jay for her birding life list. We drove to many recommended sites but never had any luck until we came here. Google maps did not have specific directions to this site so be sure to have complete directions before you hit the road. We were only able to use Google to get us to Haines City. The trail here is difficult because it is soft sand with many hills. We were on the trail for over an hour and although we heard the jays in the scrub on many occasions we did not see them until we hit the ridge at marker #44. Luckily we had taken a wrong turn early on (went straight up the hill at the map mailbox) which cut out a lot of the trail. There we were blessed with the presence of a pair of the jays. They were very curious and afforded my sister many photo opportunities. This is an amazing park for birders and I am sure it is more tolerable/enjoyable in the cooler months. Bring a lot of water, bug repellant and wear appropriate clothing and shoes.

We were hoping to see more wild life here.
The trail is sandy and walking can be challenging. This added to our experience, it was peaceful, very scenic and great to see Florida as something other than theme parks. There is no admission fee. There is a toilet facility. Please bring refreshments and plenty of water to drink. A very fulfilling morning for us Thank you
