The Koreshan State Park was formerly a religious cult, but fortunately done right. A family member took me to this historic park, well worth the $5 admission. Slow speed to the historic buildings, being mindful of wildlife crossing the road, including the delightful gopher tortoises of which i saw many. The Koreshan Unity settled here in 1894 and stayed probably until the 1930s. They were independent and built a printing shop, bakery, agriculture facilities, a store and other buildings for daily use. Their children were well educated and cared for. Today you can explore the historic buildings and walk the trails, coming across the endangered gopher tortoises and trying to spot more than 100 species of birds found here. I would recommend taking the scenic trail along the Estero River where if you're lucky the occasional alligator and other wildlife can be spotted. Alas, I had no luck but it was a wonderful opportunity to see "old Florida'' with the combination of history and nature. The last Koreshan is also buried on the site close to the buildings.

I am from New Mexico, and it was my first time visiting Florida. I was interested in its history. However, this uniformed Hispanic female park employee, who apparently hates her race, browbeat me with disapproval and condescension upon seeing that my skin was the same color as hers. Abandoned by God, who made her brown instead of white, she learned to blame, hate, distrust, and condemn her own race. It disgusts her to be Hispanic. She is worse than any other kind of racist; she takes her hatred on every Hispanic she encounters. Being bad-vibed for the color of my skin is what I remember most about my visit to the park.

This is a really neat place to visit. If you are into history then I think you’ll find it super Interesting. We visited at 7pm, the park closes at sunset. We were the only ones there and it was nice and cool. No mosquitos either! The ranger station closes at 5:00 so you can just pay from your phone- it costs $5 per vehicle to enter. I recommend doing a little research before you go about the Koreshan utopian community so you kind of get a better understanding of what you’re looking at while you’re there. It’s basically a community where some of the original houses/buildings still remain. You can walk up to each house and look in the glass doors and windows- there is a plaque to read in front of each building to give a backstory. It’s a very natural, beautiful, picturesque area. I think it’s definitely worth the $5 to enter and I recommend it if visiting the area.

Nice small park, I camped, Nice camping area, just not much to do and traffic in area is just insane! Made wishing to explore a chore. Was not for me. Good place to spend a hour or 2 not camp for days. Unless you like traffic.

Very interesting historical buildings. A lot of things to see here. We did hike the blue trail and the river path which was nice. Enjoyed walking through the bamboo forest and was able to see some ducks in the river. A nice place for couples to spend some time. Staff was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly!

This is our third year staying here during Spring Training. This is a lovely spot with lush greenery surrounding each campsite and rustic but clean bathrooms and showers. It's conveniently located near several ballparks so we've been able to go to multiple games in the area.

Quiet park, quirky cult’s history lives on, and you can kayak a beautiful lazy river, the Estero River to see wildlife living beside buildup of homes.

Swampy nothing of a park idolizing an early religious cult. No beach, no reason to go. Kayak launch on a swampy river lacks any State level significance.

Fascinating view into a little bit of cult history. The site has been well preserved by the state. Easy to park and walk throughout the site. Tells the history of the Koreshan Unity, a communal utopia formed by Cyrus Teed, a distant relative of Joseph Smith. The Koreshans followed Teed's beliefs, called Koreshanity, and he was regarded by his adherents as "the new Messiah". The Estero site was considered by the adherents to be the new Jerusalem. Awesome place to tour if you are interested in history.

It was great --- wonderful nature hikes, kayaking, history. There was also a little farmer's market there on Sunday. Great place to camp and very friendly staff.

Are the hiking trails paved? I’m wondering is this would be good for bike riding. Thanks!

No paved trails and off road bike would be better

Are the walking 'trails' level enough for a senior gent who uses a cane? It sounds very interesting and I know he'd enjoy it!

If you go on the river trail, beware the bamboo sheaths (for lack of a technical term) that are like large leaves on the ground. They pile up all around and are very slippery.

If you have an opportunity to visit Naples... it offers live theater, many restaurants, boutiques, bar, pubs, shopping, many fairs/festivals.. see fifth avenue downtown, hop on the Naples Princess for a beautiful yacht ride to the gulf ( with history provided... has some light food and drinks) and see Napes fro the water, spectacular beaches, napleszoo,, botanical garden... it’s an endless list. So Much to offer!
Enjoy ur visit

How long are the hiking trails? How much walking can be done?
Feita em 17 de março de 2015
About one mile to see the buildings and grounds and the trail along the river can go two miles and has short cuts back.
