My go to for hiking.
jun de 2020
I love this preserve and I love the hiking trails. A little over 3 miles sets the tone for a great day. Ephemeral wetlands. Hills and descents will make for a good workout. Clean well kept.

Easy walking trail with Nice exhibit
fev de 2020
Hitting the central Florida hiking trails & Parks. Stop 5. Came here with my wife as a day out. The trails begin behind the public library in Deltona Fl. The trails are very open with little cover, so I wouldn't go on a hot sunny afternoon. The walk is very sandy but easy. Did not see any wildlife til almost the end of the longest trail, where some scrub jays finally appeared. Don't forget to stop by the nature center at the beginning or end of the trails,. It was real nice and unexpected.

Hidden history

While searching on Tripadvisor for a restaurant, I stumbled upon the Lyonia Preserve, I read about it, emailed it to my hubby and we decided why not.
Tucked up along side the Deltona Regional Library is this beautiful visitors center.
Interesting, interactive and informative.
The visitors center has 2 main rooms for displays and looks like classroom or activity rooms in the back.
There are 3 trails you can opt for depending on your Florida stamina level.
You are almost always within site of the visitors center but they do suggest you check in when you come back.
Trails are clear and white sugar sand, the Florida Scrub Jay eluded us this time but that just means we need to go back.
There seems to always be something scheduled going on and there is a very nice amphitheater out back I imagine used for some of those activities.
It is all out in the open, no shade on the trails so hats, sunscreen and water should be on your packing list.

Great preserve
mar de 2019 • Amigos
I am not really an avid bird watcher but was interested in seeing the rather rare Florida Scrub Jay. The preserve is a great place to hike on a day when it is not too hot. There are quite a few scrub Jays living at the preserve. The interpretation center is also well done.

Very good place to see and photograph Scrub Jays!

This area keeps expanding to provide more space for these interesting birds. The flock moves around the property so you have to hike around to find them. Easy to photograph as they almost seem more interested in you than you them.
Enjoy

Nice scrub tranquility
nov de 2017 • A sós
I used to come to this Park often. In the last 12 months, life had other plans, but I'll be returning there soon.
I don't wait for the spectacular to give a 5-star rating. The lyonia Preserve is a scrub Preserve with its only trailhead being behind the Deltona Public Library. Your best bet is to turn right at the Circle and park to the far left to find the trail.
Well there is a pavilion with picnic tables on cement near the beginning of the trailhead, the rest of the trails are not paved. Most of the trails are Sugar Sand, and there are no signs saying that you must stay on the beaten path. So if you're an adventure, you'll enjoy trekking through the sand and scrub.
For me, it is perfect seclusion and it's only 10 minutes away from my house buy car.
With an occasional bench here and there on the main trails, it's a great place to decompress stop and pray or meditate or even read.
To return to my initial comment, I gave this Preserve a 5-star rating because of how much I've gotten from it over the years and I've never had any complaints about how it's maintained. I think nature is spectacular and this is a great place to enjoy it and hike.

One of the few places I've seen the elusive Florida scrub jay. These birds really do not like being anywhere near civilization - that was a real treat

Looking for Scrub Jays in a Natural Habitat?
nov de 2017 • Casais
Hidden jewel for enjoying a walk along sugar sand trails amongst sand pines and low lying vegetation. 3 different marked trails - .4, 1.6, & 2.4 miles. During summer months it's a good idea to bring water. Highlight is sighting the scrub jays (may also catch a glimpse of other natives - gopher tortoises, quail, rabbits, snakes, etc). And though you are asked not to, if you stand still and hold out peanuts, the birds will land on you and eat right out of your hand. Trail is free - open sunrise to sunset; 7 days a week.
Check the website for guided hikes and other special events (movies, concerts, etc). Take time to visit the Environmental Center (and the local branch library). One note - use of trails is at own risk; security is not provided. I have encountered homeless on the trails, but never a confrontation.
