Impressive Iberian-Roman settlement
ago de 2018 • Família
7km and 10 minutes by car south west of Alcañiz is this major archaeological site which dates back to the 7th century BC and was inhabited for 900 years until the 2nd century AD when it was abandoned probably due to problems of water supply and the need to move closer to the river.

Like so many Iberian settlements it dominates the surrounding agricultural land but El Palao is even more important and is thought to be the ancient capital, Osicerda which at its peak was home to over 3000 inhabitants.

There is so much still to excavate but one of the archaeologists' theories is that El Palao was a centre of oil production proving that olive oil in the Bajo Aragón dates back over 2000 years.

El Palao is one of many Iberian settlements in the region and there are special routes you can follow. There are good bilingual (Spanish-English) explanatory panels and the 360º views are always impressive.
