Took my mother to Dominical, Costa Rica 🇨🇷 for Mother's Day (which was May 8th 2022 in the United States 🇺🇸), we are from S.C. and she wanted to visit Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary on actual Mother's Day in United States 🇺🇸. We took the 9am tour and we both had a very wonderful and enjoyable experience, I highly recommend this tour. Staff and our tour guide was very informative, tour was educational, and saw many local Animals from Costa Rica that the Sanctuary helps rehab, releasing back into wild or take care of for rest of Animals life. Well worth the ticket cost and we left donation due to what Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary does for animals and Costa Rica. Sanctuary located in Jungle of Dominical, Costa Rica with stunning views. Had one of the best experiences while visiting Dominical, Costa Rica 🇨🇷.

This was such a beautiful place. I loved hearing the stories of each and every animal there. It brought a lot of insight on things I could be doing to better serve our animal community.

Such a wonderful place and they do the most incredible work for the animals. We plan on going and supporting them every time we return to Dominical. Such an educational experience also. Thanks Alturas.

Be sure to make a reservation online. We didn't & luckily for us they had a no-show.
They really put their heart & soul into this rescue-rehabilitate & release.
We could only see the resident animals, those that sadly can't be released back into the wild.
It was very interesting, we learned so much
The tours are only group max of 12. They are timed around feeding time, which makes it all the best.

A must go, this is our second time over 4 years. The care for the animals and the obviously well taken care of facilities are impressive. Not only visit, but try to donate when you can. They are doing excellent work here.

This is a great place to see some native animals of Costa Rica. I spent a week here volunteering and it was an awesome experience. They really have the animals interests at heart and go above and beyond to care for them. It’s a small place with a big heart. Stop by and take a tour. The ant eaters stole my heart.

If you want to see the wildlife of Costa Rica, this is the top place to do it. Rigo's passion for what he does comes through when he is talking about the different animals of this sanctuary. I love their philosophy "Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release." If they cannot be released due to complications the animals the rescue have a sanctuary here or Alturas finds a sanctuary that focuses on that specific animal.

Hi, I took a taxi from Dominical, you can get a bus and get it to drop you on the main road but it's quite a steep climb up to the centre from there - the driver told me only 4x4s can cope with it.

This isn't the sort of place where you get to handle the rescued animals. They mostly want to return them to the wild. There are some that have a permanent home here, but the public can only view them. It is a worthwhile place to visit as they do great work here.

Not to sound mean, but many of the cages look so small in your pictures.....I want to visit, but do not want to get upset at that? Are some larger than they appear??thank you

The upsetting feelings you will get will NOT be due to the enclosures size, but at the humans that thought they could have these animals as pets, the reason most of them are there. This is not a zoo, the efforts the sanctuary has made to keep the quality of life for the animals is above and beyond. Check out there Amazon Wish list before you arrive if you want to feel good about you visits.
Is it necessary to schedule a tour ahead of time?
