TOILET SEAT MUSEUM HAS CLOSED!
ago de 2019 • Amigos
The city of Alamo Heights recently lost its only museum when Barney Smith's toilet seat museum was sold and I believe moved to a bar or restaurant in Dallas / Fort Worth.

He was a local legend but was in his 90s and had to close up.

P.S. I'm president of the Alamo Heights Neighborhood Association and editor of the Alamo Heights Advocate news magazine.

I found out about this place through geocaching and Barney was great! The stories he told and the memory he had for all of the different seats were incredible. We enjoyed our visit and left our mark!

This was was my wife and I's second day in Texas (visiting from Canada) and we stopped in here as were in San Antonio for a few days with a friend.

97 year old Barney Smith has about 1400 toilet seats that he has done incredable art work on over the years. Don't be fooled because it's called "the toilet seat museum"; his work covers so many years and subjects this collection is truly historical.

Some of his pieces include: Star Trek, Star Wars and Transformers. One seat dedicated to WW2 contains a piece of the Berlin Wall and a nail from Auschwitz... one to ask him about, he has a tail to tell.

One other truly touching piece, dedicated to his wife before she passed, on their last anniversary of... wait for it... 74 YEARS!!! Not just a museum but a man's life, summed up in his art in this little garage.

We were there for about 1.5 hours before he asked for help moving one stack of boxes that contained several seats each of his work... sadly, and understandably, he can't keep running the museum forever and it will be moving somewhere near Dallas sometime in Feb 2019 (thankfully someone is going to ensure it's preserved). Before we knew it we were getting him more empty boxes out of storage, numbering, and stacking them about the place and before long at least another hour flew by without a thought as the 3 of us had just a small chance to share an experience with this amazing man.

A few other people popped in and out without really taking the time to REALLY appreciate it... they missed out big time! Go and see it, REALLY see it, before it moves, it just won't be the same I'm sure; still good but not the same.

Notes.
It's free but donations are welcome. Call before you go. Little kids might get board.

Quirky and one of a kind

Barney loves visitors and is so devoted to his craft. He has detailed log books, with all of his inventory and a guest book to sign according to his system . We brought him candy and nanaimo bars as he loves treats, also a Manitoba snowmachine licence plate to add to his collection - you would have thought he won the lottery by the size of his smile. Barney has many stories about his toilet seats, and his enthusiasm is infectious - we had a wonderful visit.

This place was amazing. Barney was kind enough to let us come even though it was raining. He spent a good hour with us talking about his different pieces, and we signed our state toilet seat. So glad we decided to make this trip out to Barney’s house!!

I thought this tour would take about 10 minutes, I ended up being there for an hour. I think Barney said he was up to over 1500 toilet seats. There are scenes from everything imaginable. Barney takes a lot of pride in his artwork and excitedly shows it off!

If you are in San Antonio, Barney's Toilet Seat Museum should really be on your must visit list.
Barney himself is just prescious. And he has a ton of stories to tell. The museum is placed in his garage, so it is quite small but there is still a ton of stuff to see.

The museum is has free admission. There are no opening hours - you have to call Barney and make an appointment.
Barney is 96 years old, so you might have to help him a bit with opening and/or closing. And he is going to insist that you sign your state/country toilet seat.

Well worth a visit!
