Lovely place for a weekend ride. Best for a Oneday tour. Nice and peaceful area. Many tourists come here on weekends. Best for Bike riders for a one day ride. Best for Outdoor Photography. Kids love playing in the landscape.

Hidden beauty
nov de 2017 • Amigos
Kariyathumpara is a one of the beautiful places you must visit in Calicut. It is on the way to famous Kakkayam dam. Unfortunately many of the people just pass this land without knowing about it on their way to Kakkayam. This place is so favorite for many photographers because it gifts them an awesome beauty to capture and also helps in outdoor shooting . No entry fee here and hotels are comparitively few. U will have a wonderful feeling as you feel wind and see stream, lawns, birds, horse and many more..

KARIYATHUMPARA is a good place to visit and we can set up the journey while going to KAKKAYAM dam. It is a place with good climate and on a river bank that gives freshness to us.

Visit to Kariathumpara and Peruvannamuzhi dam
fev de 2017 • Amigos
Kariathumpara is a beautiful cool place, almost like a hill station. It is in Kozhikode District of Kerala, and is just 45 kilometers away from the Kozhikode city.

Direction-wise, coming from Kozhikode, Kariyathumpara is enroute the Kakkayam dam. Kakkayam dam is 15 kilometers further up from Kariyathumpara. Peruvannamuzhi is almost same distance but in the opposite direction downwards.

Even before you reach the destination, after about 35 kilometers as you reach Thalayad, the climb up the small hills starts and the scenic beauty as you climb up was really overwhelming. The road was smooth to drive and as you reach there, you will be surprised to know that there is such a nice hilly area existing near you.

There are several resorts in Kariathumpara, but we had booked the facilities at a resort called “The Kakkayam Valley Riverview Homestay”, a fantastic place which has all the basic amenities required for a comfortable stay for individual families and day long visit by groups. The Homestay has two air conditioned Rooms and one big hall which can accommodate 30-40 persons on a day long trip. Since there are only two rooms, for night stay only two or three small families can be accommodated. The facilities are quite good and inviting. The place has two recently built compact, neat and clean AC rooms, one big hall with chairs and tables for group activities, plants and flowers all around, arrangement for serving food etc. The place is eco friendly and as close to nature as can be. The garden around, and the Passion fruit vines providing shade all over the Aangan of the Homestay, with fruits hanging from them tempting you, are all incredible sights.

An attraction on the Home stay is a natural stream of water flowing on the rocks on the property itself, with fish swimming underneath, which is cool and private. It is a great experience and really feel out of this world to just to sit on the rocks in the water. Even in the hot sun, as we sat on the rocks in the stream, the water was quite cool and nice to be in.

Children will definitely enjoy – since it is safe, they can be allowed to play in the stream – only one has to watch their steps. Due to less rain this year, the level of water was very low when we went – still it was good – the water was very clean and clear. With good rains, it should be a much better place. Those who do not mind getting completely wet can play in the water. There is a changing room just next to the stream where one can have a change of clothes.

There are several other water bodies in Kariathumpara, which are made up of water flowing from the reservoir of the Kakkayam dam. The scenic view is so beautiful, particularly so in the mornings and evenings when the sun is not so hot. Water was comparatively less but clean. The scenery all around is absolutely breathtaking and need to be seen – difficult to describe. It is a very scenic place and a very favorite destination for filming and videography – for films as well as wedding albums. We saw some shooting happening on our second trip.

If someone is interested in fishing, there is enough scope for them, which is an added attraction.

Most of the streams or water bodies are not as dangerous since the flow is not very fast and the water level is not so deep. Nevertheless, even small streams or ponds can be treacherous. So always better to be on the safe side, particularly with small children. The water in the reservoir is deep and dangerous to play in since any time there can be an increase in level of the water. That is something to be kept in mind while playing in the water bodies adjacent to the reservoir.

Mornings and evenings are the best times to be there which means it is better if one has an overnight stay or is prepared to leave the place late in the evening. Even in the hot season, we experienced that around 4 PM onwards, the place starts getting cool. The nights are said to be very cold, even when the temperature in Calicut is quite high. Best time of the year to visit this place would be when it is not so hot, after the rainy season when the whole area will be much more lush with greenery and abundant water around to play in – may be between August and March.

If planning an overnight stay overnight, the itinerary can include a full day tour to the Kakkyam dam which is 15 kms. from Kariathumpara or the Peruvannamuzhy dam which is also around 15 kilometers in the opposite direction from Kariathumpara. Ours being a day time trip, we decided to visit only the Peruvannamuzhi dam. What we see in Peruvannamuzhi is the Kuttiyadi Irrigation Project Dam which is the lower catchment area of the Kakkayam Dam. The Peruvannamuzhi dam preserves the water in its catchment area and when the water breaches a certain pre-determined level, which is marked, the gate of the reservoir is opened and the excess water let out. Electricity generation is done at Kakkayam dam. Water in the Peruvannamuzhi dam originates from the reservoirs of the Kakkyam dam which in turn receives water from the Banasura Sagar dam. The Banasura Sagar Dam is built on the tributary of the Kabini River and consists of a dam and a canal built with the objective of supporting the Kakkayam Hydro electric power project. It also provides drinking water and also water for irrigation.

For the people of Kozhikode, Peruvannamuzhi reservoir is very important since it is from where they get their supply of water. It is also where the prestigious Japan Drinking Water Project is situated. Those who are interested can also have more detailed view of the dam and the project area. The dam area is a calm and quiet land nestled in the Western Ghats. It has a beautiful garden with lots of flowers, the most attracting one being the big plant of Melasthoma full of violet flowers - a place worth seeing. Peruvannamuzhi has other tourist attractions too such as a Crocodile farm, boating facilities etc.

Another place which can be clubbed with a day long trip visit alongwith either Kakkayam or Peruvannamuzhi a beautiful garden in Koorachund, “Leela Gardens” in Koorachund, which is near to Kariathumpara. This Garden is created by one Mr. Stephan, in memory of his wife, Leela Stephan, whom he lost six years back in a very serious car accident. A noble and unique deed indeed. For Mr. Stephan, this is his Taj Mahal for his wife, who loved plants and flowers. It is a beautiful garden with a variety of flowers. Those interested can also buy plants and saplings

It is amazing that there is a hill station like place within the District of Kozhikode.
