The Red Flat was hands-down my favourite sight in Sofia. As someone from the West without personal links to the Communist era, the Red Flat offered amazing insight into the everyday life of a family in 1980s Communist Bulgaria. The experience is a self-guided audio tour which tells the story of Bulgaria's past through everyday household objects.
I would highly recommend visiting the Red Flat and going on the Communist Walking Tour (organised by the same people) for the full experience.

Very interesting and immersive introduction to Daily life in The communist days. Very Nice audio guide with fine stories and Nice voice. I loved that You Can touch tings and sit in The furnitures.

I really enjoyed this visit. The audio guide talks you through the typical life of this Bulgarian family. You are taken back in time and the wonderful thing is that you can touch all of the obejcts. As the stories take a while to tell, you end up just sitting at the dining table or on the chairs in the living room and feel like you are trully visiting this family.
The biggest bonus for me was in fact finding my deceased mother-in-law in the telephone directory!! Just amazing!
Best not to go in a big group as it could get a little crowded. Quite a lot of time is spent in each room and it's a one bedroomed flat.
The young lady who greeted me was very pleasant and explained everything perfectly.

I was very much looking forward to visiting this museum on our trip to Sofia and I was not disappointed. Tickets are purchased in a really cool gift shop (make sure to leave some time to shop for a souvenir or two) and the museum is around the corner from the shop. The lady who greeted us at the museum didn't seem that excited to be there, but she explained everything well. The audio guide is extremely thorough and helpful to understand all areas of this small apartment. I loved all the items throughout the house and it really felt "lived in." It was so interesting to learn about a normal family living through Communist era Bulgaria. The museum is immersive. You can sit on the furniture, touch the objects on display and take as many photos as you want. We visited on a warm day and there is no A/C (understandably) so you may want to factor that in if you are also visiting on a warm day.

Ακούς ιστορίες για κάθε δωμάτιο και αντικείμενο με τα ακουστικά που σου δίνουν. ~2 ώρες αν τα ακούσεις όλα. Οι ιστορίες έχουν ενδιαφέρον γιατί το διαμέρισμα διαφορετικά δεν έχει.

You get a headset to listen to as you explore the one bed flat. It is very informative and worth a visit though if you listen to all the 'stories' (over 40) it'll take about 90 mins.

We loved the experience. The place was interactive. We could touch the objects, open the closets, really explore the house.
A suitcase on a room could serve as an explanation on how did the tourism work during the communist period for example, so it was much more than just seeing objects. The audioguide was interesting and clear

We found this a really interesting and important place to visit. A completely different and unique way of presenting information - we could really picture what life was like for the family described in the flat. Loved the fact that it was so interactive. The guide at the end was really friendly and knowledgeable, we could have stayed for hours chatting! Highly recommend.
