A wonderful introduction to the ancient art of Chinese Opera. Our evening started with dinner including a delightful Lychee infused Chinese Tea, all the while excerpts of opera were shown on the TV. After dinner our host gave us the historical and artistic context of the costumes, makeup, music and stories.
At the end we were treated to a performance which incorporated what we just learnt. The costumes and makeup were a sight to behold.
A great way to spend Friday night in Singapore and an essential part of any Singapore holiday.

The Chinese Opera House in Smith street is well worth a visit. The company put on a show most nights, the cost is 25 sds per person, this covers the show and specially brewed Chinese tea a dessert. The show starts at 2000 with a talk in English, then a demonstration on Chinese Opera movements and gestures, followed by a performance of a 20 minite opera ( Sub titles in English). We really enjoyed the performance by Kwok Kwong Leun and Peng Mui Lee .Highly recommended by us.

After a previous food tour guide suggested we check this out we booked and to our delight we had an hour long very interesting insight into the history of Chinese Opera. Explanations of movements etc. They even had two of the singers come in and do a snippet of a very old Opera scene. Sub titles in English on a screen beside them to understand the story. Highly recommend you visit!

Strongly recommended to all interested in Chinese culture. The place is cosy, the atmosphere is extremely pleasant. There is short spectacle of Chinese Opera,Cantonese style, performed by people who are proud of their rich and fascinating culture and able and willing to show it to whoever comes to see them. The spectacle is short and does include any acrobatics, impossible in a small place. The explanations and tuition given by one of their stars are priceless, whets one's appetite to know much more about this millennial art.Hope to be there again, the sooner the better.

Small place. The singer could not sing live that day because she was cold and she was coughing pretty much. I totally understand that but then u should get another price or cancel the show. It was very expensive for what we got.
Pretty much talking.
Probably the show with live singer and longer had been much better.

Joined only for the delicious tea and pudding. Introductory comments to the art of chinese opera were made and proved to be very useful to take most of this experience. Only issue was some members of the Theather speaking during the presentation....they should be more respectful for their own art and with their guests.

There was a final total of six patrons inclusive. We had a set Chinese meal which was fine and the whole feeling was of sitting in someone’s dining room having their home-cooked meal. It was a nice ambience. After a hour a leader of the Chinese Theatre Circle gave a talk explaining various aspects of Chinese theatre operas, makeup, footwear, gestures and costumes which was interesting. There was a performance from two women, one playing the prince and one the princess in a short opera called “The Patriotic Princess Suicide at the Pavillion”. Considering the very small stage, the canned music and the prince being a woman this little opera was really good and most enjoyable. After pictures with the performers we walked back through the throngs eating and drinking in the packed Chinatown streets where the prices seemed very reasonable compared to central Singapore.

I travel to Singapore 5/6 times a year for business, but this time I took my kids and was looking for more regional things to visit. This did not disappoint. The tea house is tiny, tucked away in a busy chinatown street. When you arrive at first you don't know what to expect. But then out host, with breathtaking make-up and costume put us at ease and gave us a fascinating one hour insight into some of the particularities of Chinese Opera, the gestures, the make-up, the costumes, the history, the language... My children (12 and 17) and I were memorised during the interactive session. And then transfixed during the scene that was acted out. Thank you for a beautiful experience!

This a very small, but very friendly venue. We really enjoyed the presentation and the short performance. The performers are keen to ensure that visitors have a great experience. Photography is welcomed, unfortunately we had no camera with us, but they kindly took a group photo and emailed to me later. If you have any interest in this art form I recommend a visit.
