I visited part of Rio Bravo when I explored La Milpa Archaeological Site and areas surrounding La Milpa Field Station/Ecolodge. My birding tour guide took us there, and I am so grateful it was on the itinerary. (It's a bit remote, so I probably wouldn't have gone if I were traveling on my own.) The birding was tremendous, if challenging in the dense foliage. We spotted too many species to list here. I do remember vividly the Red-capped Manakins, trogons, and several fly-overs by an Ornate Hawk Eagle. The band of spider monkeys was an exceptional encounter, too. I especially loved birding around the unexcavated Mayan ruins. Hiking isn't especially difficult, but be mindful of those tree roots. Don't "binoculate" upward and walk at the same time! Someone in my group did that and fell over. Bottom line: if you love wildlife, this is your place.

Just the best experience of my life. Stunning bird life, incredible wild life, the guides were interested, interesting and seemed entirely at one with nature. Simple but very comfortable accommodation; don't expect 5 star as it's not that kind of place. Experience of a life time- just go!

après avoir embarqué à bord d'un grand hors bord nous naviguons dans une végétation luxuriante qui semble impénétrable lors de nos fréquents arrêts nous observons les crocodiles et apercevons même le museau d'un LAMANTIN

My wife and i spent 3 days at Rio Bravo's Hill Bank (by the river/lagoon with crocs and great water birds) and 3 days at La Milpa (which also has a Mayan ruin). It is run by a private conservation group Programme for Belize whose efforts deserve support.
Lots of mosquitos and chiggers and somewhat uncomfortable in January 2014 but if you are prepared to (and you need to - it is a central american jungle after all) the guides are excellent and the trails are great opportunities to see a largely untouched rainforest with cats and many other mammals, birds and reptiles. Much less expensive than Chan Chich (which is also good if you can afford it) and the staff there are dedicated and fighting to keep this precious rainforest from incursions by farmers (especially Mennonites who clear the forest they buy) and poachers.
Bravo Rio Bravo!

Just spent 3 days touring the Rio Bravo Conservation Management Area. Awesome experience - one night at each field station - great food and comfy cabins. And, wonderful naturalists for the premier bird watching experience ever - toucans, parrots, the red capped manakin and many more. Swimming at Hill Bank and touring the un-excavated Mayan ruins at La Milpa created a very rich experience. Clean, quiet, quaint and great staff at both. And - i saw a jaguarundi in the wild! Can't beat this place.
