We biked the Root River Trail from Peterson to Lanesboro and back (almost 30 miles) last week. The trail was in perfect condition. I don't think I saw any cracks or bumps anywhere - it was unbelievably smooth. The trail is very scenic. Most of the section we did followed the Root River. We saw many bald eagles, a fox, turkey, cardinals, and bluejays. There were also lots of old barns and interesting scenery. We passed through the town of Whalen, which was absolutely adorable, and continued on to Lanesboro. Lanesboro was larger with many restaurants and shops to explore. There were no busy roads to cross anywhere and only a few areas to stop for cross traffic (there was none). There were benches and picnic tables frequently. Each town had bike repair areas and public restrooms. If I had anything negative to say, and this is a stretch, would be that there could be more frequent markings as to where you are and how far next town is. There is very little signage. No biggie as most people have a map app or GPS but would have been helpful. Our original plan was to stay in Peterson (recommend) so that we could bike out and back in both directions over two days. As this was our first ride of the season that was too ambitious of a plan but staying mid-point would give you two solid days of biking. We highly recommend this trail and will be back.

I feel very fortunate to have this wonderful trail so close to my home. The trail is a four-season wonder, offering walking, biking, and skiing opportunities. The trail takes you through farmland, wooded areas, and bluffs as it snakes along and over the Root River watershed. The trail is mostly flat with a few harder inclines in the Eastern-most sections. There are large parking areas at each entry point, so you can choose a section to use based on your stamina/age/time available. Each city and entry point on the trail have air pumps and bike tool stations.

On any given day you can see/hear wildlife such as squirrels, chipmunks, woodchucks, deer, geese, wild turkeys, eagles, hawks, and a bevy of songbirds...all of which I encountered while riding most recently. You will also encounter wildflowers and a wide array of native plant life. The budding/blooming of trees in the spring and the fall colors are gorgeous times to use the trail.

This trail will take you past golf courses (mini golf and conventional golf), huge dairy production operations, a gravel pit, sinkhole displays, a beautiful dam, and some of the nicest small cities in SE Minnesota. Be sure to spend some time in the cities along the trail. There are many great activities and restaurants in each of the trail stops. The Owl Center in Houston, the Aroma Pie Shop in Whelan, and LouBelle's Ice Cream Shop are all favorites of mine.

My wife and I got a chance to spend 4 days riding on the Root River State Trail at the very end of September 2020. We stayed in Lanesboro (see my google review for the wonderful Scandinavian Inn) and did most of our rides as out and backs from Lanesboro.

The trail is in very good condition - all blacktop, very few ruts, and only a few significant bumps (most notably the bridge transitions east of Rushford). I was on a road bike and my wife was on an electric cruiser and we were both fine. Any style of bike would work well on this trail.

For the most part, the trail is pretty flat - a typical old rail line converted to a bike trail that runs through a very long valley. Exception #1 is a long gradual uphill starting about 5 miles west of Fountain all the way into Fountain. This was not a bad hill at all on the way up and of course, even better on the way down. There is also a hill on the far eastern end of the trail as you get close to Houston. We did not ride on this section of trail - it was closed for just the week we were there for repairs.

Most of the trail is tree-covered and just lovely. You are often following the river. You'll see farm fields, beautiful vistas, limestone bluffs, and all of the little towns along the way. The ony part of the trail that was non-scenic is about 2-3 miles just west of Rushford where the trail follows a highway (but maybe 25-50 feet away from it). It wasn't a problem - and that's the kind of quibble that passes for a negative on this fabulous trail!

We got there on a Sunday and rode that afternoon. Saw several people on the trail, especially between Lanesboro and Whalan. We heard from several people that that is generally the busiest part of the trail. The rest of our time there (Monday through Wednesday) the trails were pretty empty - good for Covid times.

Prescott to Whalan was a lovely 18 mile round trip bike ride with stunning views of the mountains and the Root River on a flat, paved trail. Best of the best. I ride a recumbent bike and this trail was just perfect. It’s shaded with views everywhere.

We stayed in Lanesboro and did several segments over several days. Great riding for the casual biker, elevations are for the most part fairly mild. Trail is well signed with mile markers and well stocked with amenities such as restrooms, bike air, and picnic tables sprinkled throughout. Nicely weaves through various towns as well so stops for food or treats can be done as well. Highly recommend staying in the area a few days to take it all in.

Perfect ride on this trail again. Had a great stop in Rushford to have a good lunch and a couple cold drinks. Always a lot of great places to visit in Lanesboro when we end our ride.

The Root River Trail is built on an old rail bed, so it is very flat and smooth with very gentle slopes (the engines couldn't pull up steep slopes), which makes for a very pleasant ride. Much of the trail is shaded, so it's cool even on hot days. The scenery is beautiful, with the babbling river and peaceful farm fields. The little towns that dot the trail offer a variety of dining, art, lodging, and antiquing. A great destination for a single, couple, or family.

Enjoyed wonderful adventure thanks to great bike trail conditions, fun village breaks, and a wonderful stay at the Andor Wenneson Inn (Peterson). Tips...

BIKING
By staying in Peterson, split the round trip trail adventure into two beautiful and significantly different legs and no need for a shuttle:
* Peterson-Fountain is nearly 50 miles round trip. Fairly flat until approach to Fountain. Fund stops noted below.
* Peterson-Houston is nearly 35 miles round trips with more prominent hills.

MOST SPECIAL MOMENTS
Aroma Pie in Whalen. Patio dinner, ice cream and espresso in Lanesboro, Nature Center in Houston.

STAY
The Andor Wenneson Inn was friendly and comfortable. The convenient trail side location was ideal. Hoped to find an oasis away from the swarming tourist oriented Lanesboro... this was exactly what I hoped it would be.

We stayed in Lanesboro, MN (awesome little town to stay and play) and rode the entire trail in two days. The section from Preston to Harmony is not as well maintained and is hilly but still enjoyable. Lanesboro and other small towns along the way offer a lot of interesting stops. Paved trail and suitable for all skill levels.
