The Arch of Honour was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1920. The Arch is 17 metres (55 feet) tall. It is the highlight of the Avenue of Honour, 4 km (2 1/2 miles) west of the city centre. It is a handsome structure, constructed of cement and brick, The Arch is at the corner of Sturt St and Learmonth St. The Arch commemorates those men and women from Ballarat and districts who served in armed conflicts,

The Arch of Victory and the related Avenue of Honour were openend by the Prince of Wales in 1920. The Avenue of Honour has a tree for every person from Ballarat who volunteered to serve in World War I -- 3,771 volunteers in all. These memorials were constructed and funded by the workers of Eleanor Lucas's lingerie factory. Memorial plaques were later added for World War II, Korea, Borneo, Malaya and Vietnam

I have no idea this monument existed until researching for our Victorian holiday. It is beautiful and I am surprised it isn't promoted more. It reminds me of the Champs-Eylsees. Well worth visiting if you are in the region.

The Arch of Victory caught me by surprise. It is a substantial structure, intended to commemorate the sacrifices of the people of Ballarat and districts in World War I. The Arch of Victory is the beginning of the Avenue of Honor, which consists of 3,771 trees, one for each local person who volunteered to serve in WWI. Not only was this the first such Avenue in Victoria, it is also the longest, stretching for 22 km (14 miles). The trees are elms and mountain ashes. The are other Avenues of Honor in Victoria, but this one remains among the most impressive

I can remember as a teenager (as a passenger in a car) going through this arch and being somewhat awed by the size of it and by it's contrast to the landscape around it. I leaned forward from my position in the back seat and asked my Aunt and Uncle what that was... so they explained it was for the War and the trees that we were passing were for a memorial to the war as well.

I have seen many arches around the world now, but it's interesting how this one stands out vividly in my memory as my first.

How ironic that the world was reeling from the effects of the global Spanish flu pandemic when his Royal Highness Prince Edward, the Prince of Wales, arrived in Ballarat to officially open Ballarat’s Arch of Victory on 2 June 1920. When I visited here it was days off the state of Victoria going into lockdown again because of Covid.

And further with the women's movement gaining momentum around the world that this arch was funded by female employees of Eleanor Lucas's lingerie factory.

The arch commemorates those who served in World War One. It forms the entrance to the Avenue of Honour. The Arch of Victory remains intact but memorial plaques were added in 1954 and 1987 to commemorate those who served in World War Two and in the conflicts in Korea, Borneo, Malaya and Vietnam.

Remember this from when we would drive under it as kids. Rather impressive, especially as it sits at the end of the Avenue of Honour.

Passed under arch in car and drove the avenue of honour. My boys gasped at knowledge each signed tree (Avenue of Honour) was in remembrance of a WW1 fallen soldier. Sad but beautiful treed road to ensure we never forget their sacrifices.

Our motel was on Sturt Street so we passed under the Arch of Victory quite a bit. It was especially beautiful at night, as it was nicely illuminated. Definitely worth a look.

This is a very fitting monument on Ballarats main road, very impressive, something you are more likely to see in Europe.
Continuing on from it is the tree lined Avenue of Honour.
This is a 22 kilometres of highway with hundreds of trees planted on each side each with a plaque in front of it with the name and details of a person who had served in the first World War.
What a great sight and a marvellous memorial to them all.
Well done to the people who made this happen many years ago.
Lest We Forget.
