I love NZ cememteries. I love how the denomiinations are strictly kept separate - I suppose just to forestall any after work fraternising! Most of the cemetery is reserved for Church of England (Anglican) but on the OTHER side of Barbdoes Street you would have been banished if you were Roman Catholic or Dissenting (or presumably both) or you could have decamped to the Addington Cemetery which is so worth a visit and which I have also reviewed. This one (Barbadoes) is really old (for NZ) and the earliest grave I found dated to 1851, I think and it was one of the Deans family who are well represented here.
The pretty lych gate will tell you that the records for the cemetery are help at the Central Library and I'm sure they're worth looking out as the cemetery reads like a social and cultural history of Canterbury.
It's really pleasant strolling among the trees and beside the river. Do be careful though because lots of the stones are destabilised or broken courtesy and the earthquakes.

Lovely old, classic, peaceful cemetery. It's surprisingly large. Many of the graves date from the late 1800s. The grounds are well kept.

There is something I find incredibly calming about walking through a cemetery. I have never found it scary, or morbid, but intriguing as the crumbling, lichen covered headstones hint at a life story, a family, a legacy.
I found this particularly in the Barbadoes street cemetery in Christchurch - as I wandered the well kept lawns, skirting around the beautiful Avon river, I found a familiar name on a headstone. Taking a photo, I was able to research an ancestor none of my family initially knew existed, experiencing my very own "who do you think you are?". Thank you, Barbadoes. I now myself just that little bit better.

Damaged in earthquakes, with headstones thrown down, liquefaction etc but still a pleasant and interesting wander.
