art gallery next to the ART GALLERY
jan de 2020
This smaller art gallery offers various exhibition spaces and a coffee shop which was closed for Xmas season. Free admission. Changing exhibitions.

Really disappointed
mar de 2017 • Casais
I had been really looking forward to going to COCA, but I arrived and there was a note on the door saying it is shut until 11 March - there was nothing on the website at all. I'm lucky I live in Christchurch and can go back but expect more.

Thank you for your review. We're sorry that you didn't find our website an adequate source of information about our next exhibition. Our homepage did promote the then upcoming exhibition and opening date, but we will be sure to add 'Coming Soon' to the page during the next exhibition changeover to make this clear. David Shrigley: Lose Your Mind is now open, Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm. We do hope you visit again soon.

Art?

It is a building - used to house (mostly) paintings. Nothing special. Not my forte.
There is the occasional gem but I tend to feel that many of the artists are seeing what they can "get away with" with a gullible public. For those who feel differently, see for yourself.

Thought provoking

The present exhibition is presented by an eclectic group of artists, all of whom are concerned about the damage being done to the planet by thoughtless humans. It is brutal and honest at apportioning the blame. You will leave with many concerned thoughts.

A Sunday thing to do
out de 2016 • A sós
It's exciting in Christchurch these days because the resurrections are happening thick and fast. My latest resurrection discovery is an old favourite - CoCA - just around the corner from The Christchurch Art Gallery, on Gloucester St. This is a small gallery built in the brutalist style of the 1960's - lots of hard edges, white walls and unforgiving concrete and so atmospheric for all that. It houses a moveable feast of different sorts of offerings, usually from local artists. Often there is a lot of installation pieces, which is what I saw yesterday, as well as wall art, photography, sculpture and mixed media.
Prior to the earthquakes it was also a fabulous selling gallery, with a well stocked and intriguing collection in the stacks. I asked if there were plans to start a selling collection again (I hope so) but the point seems undecided.
There's a little cafe at the front, with some outside seating, smelling beguilingly of chocolate!
CoCA is easy to access - you can walk through restart from the Bus Exchange. There is no dedicated parking but there's metered street parking and it's a short but leafy walk from the free parking in the Botanic Gardens ( access from the Armagh St Bridge).

Quiet Sunday Contemplation
jul de 2016 • Casais
A very small and limited contemporary art gallery, but is well located in the CBD and has a nice cafe (Lux) on the ground floor. We were warmly welcomed at reception. There was a 45 minute film art piece called "Vertigo Sea" as the main exhibit. It was stunningly beautiful and at the same time deeply disturbing. It focuses on the contrast between nature's raw beauty and mankind's destructive ugliness - specifically whale hunting. A must see.

Changing Exhibitions
jun de 2016
Hard to review a gallery when the exhibitions change regularly. The current A-V feature about whale slaughter in Norway is a bit disturbing, but stunning photography.
Newly restored, the building is classic C20 brutalism in concrete ;-(
