Went on a Thursday, and was a lot of fun. Alas, no Mary's Laksa stall, but there were a lot of other food choices, and a variety of other merchandise stalls. The sunset was spectacular. Hundreds of people, and the first time I have experienced a communal clap of hands as the sun set in the ocean. A definite 'must do' in Darwin.

Went on a Sunday arvo. Lots of food stalls but not many other variety stalls. Disappointed. Very crowded. Not a lot of seating. Wood fired pizza just ok. The dessert from the gluten free stall was perfect - a highlight. Sunset was beautiful but ridiculously crowded on the beach. Order a taxi or uber if going home that way. The taxis don't come as often as they tell you and maxi taxi was a rip off.

Went on a Wednesday night- very hot and very crowded. Not enough seats to sit and eat. Food was very expensive eg $17 for a souvlaki. We bought some spring rolls that were cold and tasteless, couldn’t eat them. Gado gado salad only had about 3 ingredients.
There are many other lovely places to watch the sunset. Avoid this one.

Don’t waste your time. We were very disappointed in the quality of the food. I expected fresh, quality food like one would receive if eating at markets in Asia. The Pad Thai was one gluggy mess with no taste. The vendor didn’t even have any chilli.
The Spring Roll was tasteless. The Rocky Road
is made from inferior chocolate and tasted fatty.
I could go on but I’m sure you get the idea.

A great opportunity to experience Darwin and its people. Lots of pop up shops and things to see. Grab a smoothie or a laksa and soak it all up

Great atmosphere, almost feels like you are in Thailand! A wonderful array of food trucks and good live music. The beach gets packed at sunset.

Large vibrant markets, the choice of food is amazing. A lot of food stalls just like good markets . Lots of different products, art,
live music, croc skin accessories and I bought the most amazing croc belt at a competitive price to online product, blue cyprus oils and soaps ,tee shirts, hats . didgeridoo's, Slappers thongs. It was a great way to spend the afternoon, eating and shopping . Loved it but you can't please everyone.

The Mindil beach markets are so famous, but there is part of me that asks why?
Still not really sure.
They are a good Darwin culture experience but still not sure why they are so famous.
I visited them when I was in Darwin and then I visited them again when I lived in Darwin.
I wouldn't hurry back. But again, if you are there in the dry season and want to do something that people always talk about then, hit the markets.
If you do go, I recommend the Road Kill Cafe. You can eat a buffalo burger there. Sure the one I ate was still kicking and I had it kill it but, hey I ate buffalo.
The markets on within walking distance of Darwin CBD. Near the Casino.
If this has been helpful, please give me a helpful vote.

Are the Mindhi markets open in December

Sadly for you , no, the markets are not open during the wet season, which is from November through to March the following year. As John D has stated in his reply there are other market options but they do not compare with the attraction of the well know Mindal market. If you had to choose one of the other options , Parap market in my opinion would be your best bet. This comes from someone that lived in Darwin for about 15 years and still return twice a year just for the heck of it and always make sure that I am there for the opening night of Mindal, so I am looking at it from both a resident and a tourists eyes. Please be aware that in December when you plan to visit due to "the wet season" a lot of touristy things are closed. For example a lot of the favourite swimming holes, like Berry Springs and many of the waterfalls in Litchfield. Whatever you decide, Darwin is Darwin and if you can handle the heat and humidity at that time of the year You will love it. Personally I think everybody should visit Darwin twice, once in the dry and once in the wet because they are both beautiful in their own right. Remember there is always air conditioning so don't let the thought of the build up deter you. (although it can be hectic until that rain actually falls.) Hope this helps.

Mindil Markets will be closed but there are some other (smaller) markets on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Have a look for Parap Markets or Nightcliff Markets.

Yes the market will be open. It operates Thursday afternoon/evening and Sunday afternoons during the dry season. I found the hop on hop off bus excellent to get there on a Thursday late afternoon and a cab at the end of the day took me back to my accommodation.
