Options are available for which walk suits your fitness level:

The lower Kohekohe track is about 25-30 minutes on an easy undulating track - a nice walk under canopy.

The track to the first summit is steep and quite demanding but absolutely doable for all fitness levels. For those with good fitness perhaps not too challenging- but set aside 1 hour up and half an ourdiwn for a more leisurely walk.

A full loop track is also a good option but might take another hour +.

Don’t rush it, stop and see the bird life and enjoy the view.

Locals use it as a fitness workout, but really good as a Destination walk.

I finally did this bush walk and it was a pleasant, easy 40-45 walk to the fence line. It was sort of steep in places but not too demanding. As most of the track is under the canopy there are not many stops for views. It seemed to be popular with a few locals walking up and down durunf my visit. There is nothing like exploring your own backyard.

We did the Parata track twice in one week after we finally got around to walking Hemi Matenga. What a beautiful track. Good uphill for 25-30 minutes if you're reasonably fit. Wear good walking shoes with grip as there's not a "formed" track - some steps and a couple of wee bridges at the beginning otherwise it can be slippery with lots of rocks and roots. We've heard it's best to do the Te Au track up and then come down the Parata. I also walked the Kohekohe track today which was undulating and easy going - about 20 minutes.

A pleasant, but quite demanding three hour hike through NZ bush ( if you do the whole loop.) There is a 20 min walk along the road, back to the starting point at the end. The track is reasonably well marked with arrows nailed to trees, but you do need to take care to stay on the track in places.

I do this walk four times a week and it is a great walk to get fit. I am quite fit for my age (68 years old) and takes me 32 minutes from the road to get to the summit and about 28 down although I run down in the summer when it is dry so it is quicker. I use tramping boots so I recommend them. The track is excellent because it is a little uneven which is good to help your balance and it is recommended that any exercise you do is not on a level surface. So it gets lots of ticks from me in terms of a way to get fit and stay fit.

Doc website using topo maps is a bit confusing as are some of the signposted walk times at tracks.
Follow AA yellow signs from Elizabeth st waikanae to Hemi Matenga bushwalk.
Around 60 minutes uphill to lookout on Parata track.
Moderate fitness recommended.
Sit under NZ Honeysuckle tree (rewarewa) to take in view to Paraparaumu.

Take a gentle walk through beautiful NZ bush or see how fit you are by taking the upper track to the summit. Both are great walks with the upper fitness walk taking about an hour up and a little less down (measured from the road head).

It takes about 45 minutes to get to the first lookout for great views over Kapiti Island and to the south. A reasonable degree of fitness is required, or a perfect track to use for building up fitness. Plenty of shade under a wonderful canopy of native trees and bush, also bird life (kereru). Track can get muddy after rainfall. From the summit onwards a difficult and steep descent, so return down the same way. A popular and well used local Reserve, we love having the opportunity to walk here.

We started doing this track a few weeks ago in a bid to up our fitness.
Great to have the tree cover as it keeps you a bit cooler as you sweat your way up to the top, a very pleasant climb in dappled light. We have improved our time from one hour to 45 minutes ( one way), however on talking with other trampers who have all been friendly we discovered that the first seat isn't actually the top. There is about another 20 minutes walk which is even steeper than the first part of the track to the absolute top. There is another seat there. Best done on a clear day to ensure great views. After doing this a few times, now we are feeling very smug about our new fitness levels. A great feeling of achievement rewarded by stunning vistas of the Kapiti Coast.

The day we went followed some heavy rain, so the track was very muddy in places. It's a reasonable hike to the lookout, which unfortunately wasn't signed (it's a branch off the main track). So we missed it and carried on to the track to Huia St by mistake. It gets a lot tougher then!

So make sure to turn left when the track splits, about 15 mins after you leave the narrow track next to the fence.
