Today I visited Markenfield Hall. I am still smiling.. The tour of the house brought the hall and it's incredible history to life. Our guide was clearly passionate about the place and her love and enthusiasm was inspiring ( I am so sorry not to have caught her name).
You feel as though you are entering someone's home, which indeed you are. What a joy to share it. Possibly the oldest continually occupied property in the country and a unique moated manor house.
We finished in the Great Hall with afternoon tea. A wonderful.experience.
Sarah who greeted us was so helpful and friendly. We came away feeling very honoured to have been able to visit such a very special historical treasure which is a much loved home

Get your diary out and book a tour when you can: it’s worth the wait and the journey for a rare experience.
The current “tiny tour” doesn’t leave much time for roaming, but is filled with interesting information about the place and the many characters who have been associated with it over seven hundred years.
We had a very knowledgable guide, obviously deeply involved with the renovation project and ongoing research. The excellent tea and cake at the end, served by the administrator Sarah, was delicious.
Highly recommended for those interested in history.

One of England's Hidden Gems in every sense. Markenfield is running pre-booked 'tiny tours' limited to groups of 10. The tour starts outside with an explanation of the ancient building - it was listed in the Domesday Book (1086) and the present structure dates from the early 1300s.

Once inside, the talk shifts to the families who have lived at Markenfield and their famous (and sometimes infamous) connections. The ground floor and the great hall above it are fabulous examples of medieval construction. The chapel was restored only a few years ago by the current generation of the Markenfiled family.

This is a very 'low key' and uncommercialised historic house. There is no shop, other than a small sales table, no restaurant or cafeteria and the building is still a family home. Treat it with love and respect - it deserves it!

I have visited a lot of historic houses, but Markenfield Hall is truly extraordinary. Most historic houses have a 'museum' feel but Markenfield is a family home and shows just how spectacular the results are when you combine a mostly untouched mediaeval building with sympathetic modern living.

We visited as a private group of 12 with a dedicated guide, an amazing lady who told us fascinating stories of the former residents of the Hall. From the start of the booking procedure and throughout the visit, we were warmly welcomed and it seemed that everyone was delighted to share their love of the place with us. After the tour, we had tea and cake - a splendid chocolate creation - in the old kitchen and the owner popped in to say hello.

I would highly recommend Markenfield Hall to the most jaded tourist who thinks she/he has seen it all before - this is different!

This is my second visit here with the first being a wedding years ago.

The house has survived both intact and relatively unchanged over the years and has a functioning moat.

The house is not always open but it is interesting to visit when it is.

Markenfield is rarely open and we planned pat of our trip around those days and we were so glad we did! Lovingly maintained and updated, the house sits in the middle of a working farm and is separated by a moat. The house is owner occupied and reflects the interests of the family. The docents were very informative and once we asked some intelligent questions, they got very chatty and friendly. Loved it!

After a mile long narrow winding single track drive we were welcomed by two stewards both of whome were volunteers and extremely knowledgable . We were split into 2 parties of about 20 in each. We entered the courtyard and were informed as to how the hall evolved through the years then we entered the 14th century hall. Going around the various rooms of the house we listened to the explanations of both the family history and paintings. The family still live at the hall. After visiting the chapel we descended to be given tea and really good slices of cake. A very interesting experience.

The term "hidden gem" is, in my opinion, overused. However, this place is truly that! I brought some friends visiting from the states and told them to watch for the surprise, and when they saw the moat, they loved it! The volunteers were very enthusiastic and informative, and even Lady Deirdre, who lives here, sometimes greets people and hands out informative leaflets. We found the house charming and the grounds and moat gorgeous. Only open 30 days out of the year-through 19th of May and 16-30th June this year (from 2-5pm) ,so go there NOW!! Only £6 entry.

11th century country house/farmhouse with a moat, so different from the great houses! Grantley family in residence since 1761, lots of history. Walk around the moat and lookout for the 2 black swans. Entry is along a single track road off the A61 Ripon to Harrogate road. Park in the one acre paddock alongside the moat. No Cafe but there is a 🚾. You can probably spend around 2 hours looking around. Only open on specific dates so check first before travelling.
