Be prepared for a steep climb. On a nice day you will be rewarded with a good view of Upper Hutt and the valley. It's not a memorable walk given that you follow a 4WD gravel road all the way but it's great if you need a good climb as a workout.

A good slog for about an hour 20mins straight up, with great views over the Hutt Valley (and some views over the Wairarapa). Lovely 'goblin forest' Bush towards the top too. Could be hot on a fine day as there's not a lot of bush cover.

This is a good track for fitness. There's only a few flattter or slight downhill parts on the way up (which feel so good). Works hamstrings and calves on way up, and quads on way down

1 hr 15 mins up (ish)
55 mins down (ish)

My 12 yr old son only whinged a bit on the way down, that's because it can be a little bit slippy underfoot

On a good day the views are really good

If you love off road running and are looking for a steep climb to burn those legs, this is the one.

Pretty much a 4km slog to the top with a number of long steep climbs.

The reward is the breathtaking view from the top.

This is a beautiful walk close to Wellington. I gave it an "average" rating, because this walk cannot compete with the great walks. However, it is still worth doing it and you won't regret it. Some pictures of the gorgeous view enclosed.

Mt Climie summit is 860 metres above sea level and for the reasonably fit the climb is a great cardio workout. Wear sturdy hiking boots and warm clothing. I went up two days ago when the summit was in deep snow and it was freezing with a biting wind so take care. I have been up in summer when it has been hot so take plenty to drink. It took me 90 minutes to the first summit from the Plateau Road top car-park but snow was too deep to get to Climie 2. On a clear day you can see for 100 miles in every direction including to the South Island and over to Kapiti. The view over Lake Wairarapa is also spectacular. As the climb is steep I would suggest taking it gently for the first half hour, the middle section is the hardest so leave some gas in your tank for the last half hour to the summit. The forest and climate changes the higher you go.

Gives you a workout both ways, uphill we had to take breaks every now and then as it is very relentless. Downhill is also a workout as the track is reasonably steep and you need to hold yourself back to prevent rolling down the hill. Great for the thighs. Fantastic views at the top. We went on a windless day so it wasn't too exposed but the temperatures are noticeably cooler the higher you go, so take windproof gear and very sturdy shoes.
Took us 1 3/4 hours on the way up + 10 minutes to Climie No. 2, and exactly an hour back down.

This track climbs straight up from the Tunnel Gully recreation area's upper carpark and continues to climb until you finally get to Climie North towers on top of the hill. The track is quite wide and easy to walk but it does need some physical fitness as it is relentless. There are some wonderful changes of scenery along the way (the Greater Wellington Regional Council lists over 5 different flora levels) culminating in some gorgeous silver beech covered in lichen. We managed the walk to North Climie in about 1.5 hours and then walked another 10 minutes to Climie 2 where the other telecommunications towers are. The views around the whole Upper hutt valley, the Hutt River and over to the other side are magnificent and we were there on a clear day so well worth the climb. We could even see all the way down to Wellington Harbour and across to parts of the south island well in the distance. You feel like you are in the clouds its so high.
As mentioned in other reviews the top of the ridge is extremely exposed so take some wind protection if its not so nice a day.
The trip back took around an 1hr - but its a bit tough on the knees as there are few flat areas to give a respite from the downhill climb.

The climb is worth it great side tracks off to tunnel gully and may morn.
Easy access to tunnel gully and maymorn tracks.
Great views over Wiararapa- good run on a rainy day. Not recommended on windy day. Very exposed as you near the top.
