Beautiful village

Stopped at the Abbey before going down into Culross, the village is amazing to see, the Abbey is old but is worth if only if you go down to the village

Worth a visit, but make sure you visit the adjacent church with its graveyard and take a peek at Abbey House
set de 2021
This is situated up hill from the village. I drove there and there is on road parking although no official car park.

Walking around is easy enough but, to get a peek at the upper floors in one place, a glorified metal ladder is the only access. However having made the climb I found the most interesting parts were on the ground floor anyway.

Make sure you visit the graveyard in the adjacent Abbey Church. There is a bit of a gap in the hedge so you can get a look at Abbey House with its wonderful Inigo Jones inspired frontage. Not yet open to the public it is a gem and well ahead of its time in style when built.

Top of the hill
set de 2021 • Casais
If you’re up for a trek to the top of the hill you’ll come to the old abbey ruins. Not a huge amount deal to see, but there’s an information board plus a steep metal staircase to climb up. Entry is free but the gates are locked at dusk.

part of the culross experience
jun de 2021
if you are coming to Culross it is worth visiting but not if you are only coming to see the abbey. It is a lovely setting and the old cemetery is very interesting as there are some very old tombstones.

A magical and beautiful place
out de 2019
Situated at the top of the village, steep climb up the hill but worth it. Once you are near the top , you can explore the ruins of Culross Abbey. Culross Abbey was founded in 1217. The old part of the original 13th century abbey is accessible from the rear. There isn't much to see although you can climb the metal stairs to the next level. The east end still survives today as the Culross Parish Church. The Parish Church dates back to the early 1630s . In 1642 the north transept was converted into a tomb house by Sir George Bruce, Laird of Carnock. Alabaster carved effigies of him, his wife, and eight children can still be viewed there today. The church has beautiful stained glass windows and is located next to the cemetery. It is also worth visiting this place. Very silent, quiet, peaceful. Very atmospheric walking around the grounds of the old Abbey .

Not much to see when church is closed
ago de 2020
This ruined abbey was the home of Cistercian monks, but fallen out of use by the 16th century. There's very little of the abbey left to see except the former dining hall which does actually have some interesting Gothic design features on the ceiling. There's some information boards near the entrance and at the back, which are actually quite informative. The part of the abbey that's still in use is the parish church, but that was closed, so there really wasn't much to see.

The Abbey, ancient abbey and parish church...
set de 2019
Defiantly worth the walk upward to be rewarded with a fascinating exploration of the Abbey, its ruins and the beautiful parish church.
So much history here and lots of information available.
Great views from the top and loved just wandering through those narrow streets.
Humbling tributes to the fallen at the parish church...
