We were walking our last stage of the Teesdale Way, from Middleton in Teesdale to the end point at Dufton. This part of the Teesdale Way follows the Pennine Way (in fact there are no signs at all for the Teesdale Way here). We really lucked out with the weather as it was a beautiful sunny day with blue blue skies... But literally every hour of the walk just got better and better! From walking through beautiful fields in flower following pretty little streams, to rejoining the River Tees and walking up the river to great views at Low Force and then right peering down into the thunderous depths from the very top of High Force! (both reviewed separately)
The unexpected big highlights of our walk were the spectacular views at High Cup Nick and fun scrambling around Cauldron Snout (also reviewed separately). It simply cannot be over exaggerated just how spectacular these are. We took nearly 1000 photos on our 11 hour walk - yup I got carried away! But there really is such beauty practically at every step of this walk, whichever way you look!
We would recommend to anyone that is relatively fit and agile to spend a few days in this area and to walk as much as possible, as this is the only way to find all these special hidden places!

We walked up the Stanhope Burn - steadily continuously uphill on mostly good tracks - and back via Jollybody farm. A pleasant walk of about 2 hours with great views.

It is always good for the soul to stop and enjoy the truly beautiful North Pennines AONB.
The views and walks are hard to beat (without coastline).

Spend time and tour the area and the many interesting villages. Do not be afraid to abandon the Car and meander down pathways by streams and along the Banks of the River Wear as they invariably lead to enchanting encounters.

This area of Britain is a hidden gem. The peace and tranquility is wonderful to experience. It is particularly good for those who love walking or cycling in an area where you may not encounter anyone else all day. The solitude is awe inspiring.

Thanks for your review of the North Pennines - I'm pleased you've had a good visit. A few years ago we asked people what was their top motivation for visiting and 'peace and tranquillity' was the top reason :)

Visited Allenhead and looked around village. A small museum that we didn't look at this time but walked around the mining related structures. Then explored the end of village searching for insects and plants. Self-guided but there are information boards and more on the Internet.

Thanks for your review - I'm pleased that you had a good visit to Allenheads and the wider North Pennines - it's not an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) for nothing! It won't be long before the waders are back to the moors in numbers - bringing the area alive again for spring :)

The Killhope Leadmining Museum provides a down to earth look at the geology and historical and social aspects of leadmining in the North Pennines and also can be used to get a mini intro to the flora and fauna of the region. The North Pennines in general will transport you into a different world that will refresh your spirits and make you want to go back. People here are open and friendly. Plan your trip ahead of time and watch out for the sheep.

Many thanks for your review - I'm really pleased you enjoyed your trip to Killhope Lead Mining Museum - it's a remarkable museum telling the story of lead mining in the area and bringing the lives of the people involved to life! It's interesting that you felt a visit to the North Pennines 'refreshed your spirits' - when we asked people a while ago what their top motivation was for visiting the area - 'peace and tranquility' came out top!

Some fantastic walking to be enjoyed in the area, followed by afternoon tea in one of the many tearooms in one of the villages.

Just spent the afternoon visiting the monumental art installation that is 'Hush' in Upper Teesdale - can't tell you how much joy it brought me. A lovely amble through woodland and farm yards to get to Bales Hush and it was well worth the effort. The sun came out and the sails of fabric dazzled in the breeze.
Met some fantastic people - fellow walkers, locals who lived nearby and even the artist - Steve Messam.
Start your adventure at Bowlees Visitor Centre.
Wear some sturdy shoes as it can get a bit damp under foot but hurry as it will be gone by 5th August.

I am visiting the north Pennines with my 3 children and 2 step children in a few weeks time (staying near Consett). My children are great walkers but my step children aren't. Can anyone suggest a route that would be full of features to entice the reluctant walkers

Hi Tracy P, You could look at walking in the Teesdale area High Force walk is nice.. The walk to High Cup Nick from Cow Green is great if you like wilderness walking - check out the views of High Cup Nick. Alternatively, you head North and walk parts of Hadrian's Wall and visit some of the historical sites. There is also Kielder Water, which has walks and interesting sites.
