This reserve is an RSPB reserve and is not open to the public except on organised walks/ visits. The best time to go is in Winter when the fields are flooded and there are thousands of ducks, wading birds and birds of prey to see. Viewing is from an old barn converted to a hide and it can be quite cold especially when it's windy as it's not fully enclosed so warm clothing is essential. Binoculars or a telescope are a must as the birds are not that close. Details of visits can be found on the RSPB website. There is a track along the edge of the reserve which is a public right of way and this can be nice for a summer stroll.

Like all the reserves in the County, this one has plenty to appreciate. The unique habitat of the levels makes for some unusual finds.

Visited Swell Wood on a cold, raw day last March (weren't they all like that) Spring is the best time to visit as the Heronry is in full swing with nest building and a lot of to and froing from the Herons.
Difficult to visit West Sedgemoor itself other than on a organised tour as they are keen to protect the breeding wildfowl and waders

We go once or twice a year. Not interested in the herons but first a quiet walk round the woodland section and a bit of patience reveals a variety of interesting birds. Highlight for us was the walk down the hill (it's worth the struggle back) onto the levels - the hedging along the drove-way was heaving with birds of all types, absolutely fantastic -spring I think. We saw a group of fox cubs gambolling in the sun. + in summer a decent spread of butterflies and damselflies, great!

This is a terrific place for birdwatching, especially in the winter, when the great flocks of ducks and waders are in. Well worth a visit.

I mean herons - go in the spring to watch them from the hide and marvel. West Sedgemoor is an extraordinary spot - wide open space, no roads, stunning setting

Why is West Sedgemoor only open on guided walks, as most other RSPB reserve you don’t have to go on a guided walk unless you want to. But at West Sedgemoor the only way to visit the majority of West Sedgemoor is by going on a booked guided walk. What is the reason for that?
