Alba the marine biologist who accompanied us was wonderful! Informative and kind and lovely. Norbert the captain was great at communicating with the scouts and found 4 adult whales, a baby and an adolescent
I called and emailed to book and they were very casual and did not need deposit. Once there they check with scouts and don’t take you out if not worth it!

Wonderful trip. At first we were informed that whale watchers had not seen any whales but there was a pod of dolphins and we would head there first and see if anything crops up. There was about 12 of us on a Zodiac. the dolphins were tremendous and got some really good photos. after following the dolphins we were told there were Sperm whales quite close so we headed for them. There were 3 clusters - 7 sperm whales in total. they sit lower in the water so are less spectacular so I switched camera off and missed 2 whales tails out of the water as they dove. Wish I could add a picture.

This was our second trip with Whale Watch Azores, and again it exceeded expectations. Lisa Steiner’s enthusiasm is infectious and we were fortunate to once again have Jairo’s skill and keen-sightedness as skipper. On our first trip we booked through a specialist travel agent, but this time we arranged the flights ourselves via TAP and booked the tour directly with Lisa via the Whale Watch Azores website. If you love whales and dolphins then I could not recommend this operator highly enough. Lisa came to the Azores in 1988 as part of IFAW's research team and her knowledge is second to none, being able to identify the resident Sperm whales by their tail, and being able to tell you on the spot when it was last seen. Lisa also acted as host during the evenings, taking us to a different restaurant each night of the tour. We left knowing that we will return again.

Lisa Steiner is a great host both on the catamaran & each evening exploring different restaurants in the town. Lisa is knowledgeable & informative with such a love of the amazing whales & dolphins you will see. Each day, as this is wildlife at its best,is different with the excitement of never knowing what each day holds . On my recent trip we actually topped all my expectations by seeing a blue whale . A rare thing in July almost reducing me to tears with the pleasure of seeing this amazing creature . Whatever the day holds you will not be disappointed in this lovely place .

Whale watching is a must do in Horta and this is a very friendly and knowledgeable operator. Highly recommend but be sure to dress for the weather as you are out at sea for 4 hours!

The Azores in the middle of the Atlantic are stunning. Local planes hop you around in half an hour or less. Very friendly local people. Amazing scenery. Plenty of history and space to relax. Would recommend to everyone to enjoy the culture, bubbling swimming pools and the climate.
Unfortunately well organised and expensive Saga Holidays were quite clever about inventing extra charges. Their tours are not suitable for single travellers. Their rep will make sure that you sit at the dinner table with whoever you don't get on with and if you don't turn up, will get you out of bed.

We had the tour with "MobyCick-Tours"
The captain was determined to see not only dolphins but also whales, and after 2 hours he finally found them.
All other small speed boats have given up by then, but not the captain Jose Costa!
It was the cheapest tour, and the most convenient one.

If you love whales, dolphins and sea life in general, then this is one trip that you must not miss under any circumstances. I have just returned from doing a full 9 night excursion with WWA booked through Archipelago Choice based in Kendal (who provided flawless travel arrangements, by the way). We all stayed at the Hotel Do Canal in Horta harbour (reviewed separately) which is a two minute walk from the lobby to the harbour where the catamaran, Physeter, is moored. The price includes all b/b accommodation, lunches (on the boat) and evening meals for the days when you are out at sea all day.
We were out at sea from 9 - 4 each day.
The restaurants we went to as part of the package provided excellent food, without exception.
We had two "shore" days when we were free to do what we wanted - explore the island or - yes - go out again to sea! If you do go out to sea on the "shore" days, then these trips must be paid for and you buy your own evening meal on those days as well. The Physeter is sometimes available to go out again on the "shore" days as are Norberto's RIB's. There are two other companies to go out with as well if you can't find a place at Norberto's / WWA.
The other thing to note is that some flights arrive very early in the islands. In that case you will arrive at the hotel at about 1030 am so if you are a whale addict (as I am ), there is time to leg it down to the harbour and book a preliminary afternoon's whale watching on the day you arrive.
So much for the logistics.
I actually lost track of the numbers of whales (let alone dolphins) that we saw - blues, fins (my personal favourites and 23 on one day), sei, humpbacks, pilots and any number of sperm whales (Lisa's favourites!!). The dolphins included "common", spotted, bottlenose, Rissos etc.. We also saw turtles and many types of sea birds. The whole thing was simply fantastic.
The weather was mainly dry with a few sunny days but it did get quite choppy on occasion - you are in the Atlantic after all.
Lisa has been hosting this trip for a long time and it shows. Her knowledge is second to none and her passion for the animals and the environment is obvious from the moment you meet her. She is a great host and looked after us all very well. Both Lisa and Nuno were very insistent about keeping to the regulations and maintaining a respectful distance from the whales.
Although you can't book the whales or the weather, don't let this stop you. This trip is worth every penny and you will remember it for along time.
My thanks to Lisa and Nuno for an unforgettable trip. I know I wasn't the only one who was sad to leave.
