Planned it carefully and saw MANY exotic-looking and uncommon birds!
mar de 2021
We read some tips on when it's best to spot birds in general and we went in the morning after there had been a rainfall the previous night. This was in mid-March.

There are several transport options. If you're near the train station, take the metro; if you're near the bus station in the Soho area by the water, the best bus is bus 40 to the Sacaba Beach stop, and then walk towards the cute bridge "Pasarela Senda Litoral-Rio Guadalhorce". We tried walking the other way, attempting to get off the beaten path in vain. On Google street view, it seems like you'd be able to cross the river by a small connecting piece of beach that borders the sea. We tried this but it was completely flooded so it would be impossible unless you wanted to swim across. So then we had to walk all the way back.

We began to see cool birds as soon as we were at the edge of the reserve (before even crossing the bridge) - we saw two hoopoes, a kestrel hovering in mid-air for minutes at a time looking for prey, and a red-legged partridge.

After crossing the bridge and walking for about 5 minutes, there is a left turn and everything is fairly well-marked. There are a couple different routes so we opted to see two of the observatories: "Observatorio de Laguna Escondida" and "Observatorio de Laguna Grande". The Laguna Grande is where you get the money shot.

We had been in Malaga for a couple months and had been putting this off because we weren't sure if it would be any good but WOW... this went waaay beyond our expectations. Apart from the birds I mentioned above, we saw: northern shovelers, a group of greater flamingos, swifts, a Eurasian coot, black-winged stilts, a baby woodchat shrike, a wood sandpiper, sooo many great cormorants, and two glossy ibises. I don't know much about exotic birds so I looked up the names after getting home. The stilts and ibises looked out of place on the European continent. I'd expect to find them somewhere in Africa or maybe while playing Jumanji.

We reached the Laguna Grande around 10am and that seemed to be a good time for March. The hotter in the season it gets, the earlier you probably want to get there. It was already getting hot walking back and there was no shade anymore.

I suspect that we were so lucky partially because we carefully selected the right weather and time of day. Make sure to plan this out right, and if you like birds, it will be so worth it!!

Super place for birdwatching
Spent a lovely day here on Friday 21st Feb
Saw about 40 different birds
Not that easy to get to but the no 5 bus from Malaga is the best way by bus
But with the new bridge going up should be easier to access from the east soon

Peaceful morning at Guadalhorce
fev de 2020 • A sós
Have just spent the most peaceful and nature surrounded morning at Guadalhorce Park. Easy to find, well signed paths, great hides for bird watching - should have taken binoculars! Just lovely.

I visited end of october and the start of november, there were plenty of waders feeding and roosting. e,g sanderling, dunlin, black winged stilts, ringed plover, little ringed plover, 3 greater flamingo.
the site has many notice boards or signs which show you the tracks to take and where the 3 or 4 hides ( blinds ) are situated.
other birds seen were , booted eagle ( pale and dark phase birds ) kingfishers 4+. shovellers , teal 2+ wigeon 2, shelduck 3, cormorant colony, sardinian warbler , cettes warbler ( heard only ). greenfinch, black headed gull flock, yellow legged gulls , stonechats , zitting cisticola ( just 1 ) about 20 common waxbills where the reserve edge . 1 little egret. moorhen
reaches the Main motorway to the east. An osprey was perched on the same post each of the 3-4 days i visited the site. the local birders were very helpful to overseas travellers.

Wow! Superb bird-watching area - an easy bus ride from Malaga city centre

Firstly, thanks so much to jmkt2017, for their previous comments on this thread, which were really helpful. Their instructions were spot on - taking the No 5 bus to Guadalmar, then a very short walk around the corner and, hey presto, you will find yourself on a vast and fabulous bird reserve (and no entrance fee, but no loos etc either). The path is a circular route around the vast, open site which borders the beach, from where there is a proper entrance through the fence. We spent about 2 hours there in total, mainly in the hide overlooking one of the lagoons, watching black-winged stilts, cormorants, egrets, amongst others. It was peaceful (despite a very busy road nearby), and the paths are well used by walkers and cyclists, so there are other humans around. It was a brilliant find and highly recommended for walkers and bird-watchers alike.

Senderismo!

Brilliant birdwatching
jan de 2019 • Casais
A late January morning visit yielded Booted Eagles, White-headed ducks and some 45 other species here.. Very easy to get there by bus from Malaga - take the No 5 and alight at M Curros Enriquez in Guadalmar.(The next bus stop is displayed in the bus so don't worry about missing it) . Walk back to the first road on the right (Calle Guardalhorce) walk past the church and continue along the road until you reach the entrance. It would have warranted 5 stars had there been any facilities but the unavoidable absence of toilets (or cover) limits the length of your stay. I am not sure that the reserve would appeal to non birders unless they were staying nearby.
