Basically a Beatrix Potter shop with a small but packed museum attached. Lots of memorabilia and, if you know the stories well, it fascinating to learn about the real story behind the Tailor of Gloucester tale.

This was an absolute must visit on our few days in Gloucester - everything Beatrix Potter in the actual building that inspired The Tailor of Gloucester - simply magical.

We visited straight after our visit to the cathedral. It’s a magical, traditional little shop located in a little alley. A must see for Beatrix Potter fans. I enjoyed peering through the window and taking a few pics of the charming shop display as it was closed during our time there.

Recommended when in the area.

WHAT IT IS.

The shopfront Betrix Potter visited during her Gloucester trip, who immortalized it with her illustrated storybook The Tailor of Gloucester (1903).

WHAT'S ON.

Permanent museum upstairs. Featuring photos and Potter's illustrations side by side, the original story she heard here (inspired the book) and the subsequent painful word cuts and other editorial changes to her manuscript.

Also in the middle of the room is a race game (clip) with 124 squares to go.

WHERE IT IS.

The shop is on a small alley so it takes time to find it.

Exit Gloucester Station, cross the main road, turn right and walk along Station Road. Turn left into Clarance Street until you reach Eastgate Street. You then walk all the way and continue on to Westgate Street. Turn into the alley College Court to your right. This little gemstone attraction is right inside.

If you instead see the Gloucester Cathedral to your right, too bad you've gone too far - back one square, try again.

There is another slightly shorter path involving Gloucester Cathedral's back garden. Not recommended for those who get lost easily.

Piccolo ma pieno di cose carine, con annesso piccolo museo al piano superiore con pezzi notevoli.
Vincitore di vari premi.
Assolutamente imperdibile per gli amanti del genere e piacevole per gli altri.

Visited this tiny little house in Gloucester during a day trip with some friends. It stands in a narrow alley close to Gloucester cathedral. It is said to be the original house where the Tailor of Goucester lived and worked which Beatrix Potter based her TALE OF THE THE TAILOR OF GLOUCESTER on. A very tiny two roomed old house packed to the rafters with memorabilia of the story and a gift shop selling all sorts of souvenirs relating to Beatrix Potters tales. Loved it. Free entry but only holds a small number of people at a time due to size of rooms.

A charming discovery, near the Cathedral, is the tailor's shop which Beatrix Potter used and sketched as the backcloth for her book 'The Tailor of Gloucester' published in 1903.

The tale was based on a real story, of a tailor commissioned to make a waistcoat for a new mayor, who found that the waistcoat had been completed, except for one button, overnight, with a note 'no more twist', ie no more thread. The story circulating suggested that the fairies (rather than his assistants) had done it; while Potter had mice doing it in her book.

Today the Tailor's Shop remains as a museum and shop celebrating this and the other stories of Beatrix Potter, including a waistcoat created in 1980 by the ladies of the Gloucestershire Federation of Women's Institutes.

This shop is based on the Beatrix Potter story The Tailor of Gloucester. In the window is a display of Beatrix Potter characters and inside is a small museum. The shop also sells Beatrix Potter memorabilia. It’s very small but it’s all free so can’t complain.

I was excited to discover a Beatrix Potter museum during a recent visit to Gloucester, but was disappointed to discover it closed (reason for four stars), yet the shop window was enticing enough to keep me happy with its animatronic cats and mice.
We will certainly make a return trip so we can explore the inside in the future.
