A Mythic Mentor Full of Magic
set de 2019
Michael Quirke is a rare gem of a human being! His intimacy with Irish faerie tales and mythology left me greatly inspired when my wife and I were fortunate enough to visit Erin's green isle back in 2014. What makes his knowledge so incredible to me is that he's clearly had time to stitch together the stories he tells into a cohesive tapestry of tales over a lifetime. He was willing to carve a small sample carving for free--and I am STILL resolved to surprise my wife with a statue of the goddess Brigid from his outstanding shop! I'm saving up for this Yule and hoping I can afford the cost + shipping all the way from Fotla to Califia!

A must stop
jun de 2019
I visited Mr. Quirke's shop on three different visits to the Yeats School in the early and mid 2000's. On the first visit my wife was with me and he made her a quick carve with her name. I had him do another on another visit and I gave it to my wife on my return. The two pieces have remained on my desk ever since, reminding me each day of time well spent with a first rate storyteller. Part of Yeats' soul is in that man. I am so very pleased he is still in his shop, still carving and telling wonderful tales.

A Living Legend - Don't Miss Talking to this Artist
set de 2018
I've heard about Michael Quirke for Years and never was able to get to his store when he was in there. He's a free spirit - uses NO technology (not even a photo copy machine) except a telephone. His artwork is unusual and based on mythology - mostly mythology, but the real treat with Michael Quirke is the storytelling. We were captivated by for more than an hour by his musings, jokes and stories about the artwork that he's created. I suspect that many years from now when Michael Quirke and the rest of us are long gone from this world, people in Sligo will still be talking about the "bad butcher" who mesmerized people with his stories and wood carvings. One of the finest storytellers I've ever listened to .

He makes national treasures...collectors crafts out of raw wood

I stopped in his shop on a whim in the 1980s and he carved something for me, blathering the whole time about Irish history, art. He even took notes and drew pictures for me, which I still have! He is a kind, generous and knowledgeable man who is himself a kind of national treasure. I still have the carving, and it is one of the most unique and organic pieces of art I have ever owned or seen. I hope to go back someday...Frank Flanagan

Early Michael
nov de 2017 • Família
We first visited Michael in May, 1971 when we were driving from Shannon to Derry with my folks (Who hadn’t been home to Ireland since 1947), We stopped for lunch in Sligo town and came upon the Quirkes butcher shop while strolling the street. Michael had some carvings in the window. We went in the door and Michael was cutting a piece of beef for a customer, his Mother was collecting the money and he welcomed us like old friends. Great story teller, marvelous carvings....naturally, we bought a couple.....and we continued to visit over the years. I have 9 pieces ( I love them), each of my brothers have some and Michael even carved a wooden plaque for my son showing a fisherman with fish (Des, the fly-fisherman) which he treasures.I am sorry to say that I haven’t been there in the last 20+ years but I can see from the pictures that Michael hasn’t changed.
A Great Man , Michael !!!

Absolute Highlight of Sligo
set de 2017 • A sós
Drove from Dublin in the East to Galway in the West, South of Galway to the Cliffs of Moher and the small beautiful village of Quilty, North of Galway to Sligo .. exploring as much as possible and enjoying every second.
We happened upon the shop labeled M. Quirk, having not a single idea of how absolutely awed we would be.
Mr. Quirk is an absolute must, ranking at the very top of the list of where you NEED to visit if ever anywhere near Sligo. Make the time, you won't be disappointed!
His skilled craft of wood carving is incredible, which is reason enough. But what's more significant is the story behind his work - Not only his personal history of life, growing up, and the incredible talent passed on to his children (whose works are displayed around the shop) .. But the incredibly detailed story, history, knowledge that he shares, which he tells with such great detail you'd think he has physically been alive since the beginning of human life in Erie.
We planned a day trip from Tuam to Sligo, walked around Sligo for a bit, visited some shops, all beautiful, but spent the majority of our day completely immersed and captivated by Mr. Quirk.
Of the MANY places and memories experienced throughout my journey in Ireland, that will all stay with me forever, the shop of Michael Quirk will always be one which I am eternally grateful to have unknowingly wandered into.
