We were in beautiful Mellifont recentl, my first visit in a few years. It was out of season so the visitors centre was closed. No matter because there are so many good info display boards dotted about that yiy still get plenty out of your visit
The lavabo was a highlight, where the Monks washed their hands before meals. It's a deceptively large site with so much to see and learn. Beautifully maintained with well kept paths, lots of benches to just sit and contemplate, and as I mentioned loads if info boards.
There's a small free car park at the entrance.
Just a lovely place, so quiet and peaceful in the spring sunshine

We took a small detour to explore Mellifont Abbey and I'm so glad we did. As a history buff, it was interesting to see the ruins and learn about how they functioned. There is also a lovely picnic area beside a quiet stream. It's very pleasant, and we left a donation at the vistor's center.

Mellifont Abbey is a 12th-century Cistercian abbey that became of Ireland's wealthiest religious foundations, at one point it housed over 400 monks.

Myself and my partner got a fantastic tour around the Abbey this morning by Karen, such a historic, spiritual and peaceful place. Highly recommended.

Lovely to see the ruins of the old abbey. It was very quiet when we arrived so it was possible to imagine the solitude of the place. Some of the ruins are quite well preserved. Would recommend it for a visit. Toilets while old, were very clean too (and it was the end of the day when we visited).

Mellifont Abbey is a wonderful place to wander and absorb history. Because we were there in February, the visitor center was not open, but we also had the entire place to ourselves. They do a good job of noting what the ruined buildings were originally and apply some context for you. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit here and would definitely come again.

What a special and historic place! One of the benefits of these times is that we almost had it to ourselves and could really soak up its very special atmosphere.
The OPW have done a great job - easy to self guide with their high quality displays. Also lovely were the poems, written by a staff member, displayed at each of the main buildings. You don't need to be a child to enjoy their humour, and at the same time be informed about what went on where.
We didn't have long to stay there but really enjoyed our visit. As my father would have said, it's "worth a detour"!

This wonderful monastic site with extensive and interesting ruins is perfect for a self-guided tour given the high quality of the sign-boards. Hearing the chant emmanating from the ruins was quite a magical experience.
There are no guided tours at the moment because of Covid 19 but we met with Louis who was giving out work-sheets to families - he was very helpful, invited our questions and was very knowledgeable.
This is a great OPW site which is well worth a visit. It is very suitable for families, a great place for a picnic or family walk amid the well-kept and wonderfully spacious grounds.

Hello.
im very sure they run tours from Droggeda (local town) and the visitor centre in the town will arrange for you stress free. i suggest renting a car as there is many other beautiful attractions around that area. ensure you visit Newgrange..
