Open 2 days a week this attraction is fantastic! Supported by brilliant volunteers the museum is open for exploring a range of planes and engines and most importantly the rescued and resurrected Loch Doon Spitfire! A talk was given from the lovely volunteer, Peter who was one of the divers who discovered the wreckage in the 1980s. It was a really engaging trip and well worth the visit

Came here knowing nothing about this museum and left full of information about the planes and the airfield and what had happened there during WW2.
Exceptionally interesting story about the Loch Doon spitfire.
This airfield is manned by volunteers all of whom were willing to talk to visitors and answered questions knowledgeably.
There is a wee tea room where you can enjoy snacks and the area is dotted with picnic tables so you can take your own food to eat as well.
Dogs on leads are also welcomed.
Will definitely return on our next visit to the area.

Excellent afternoon. Around 20 aircraft out doors plus plenty of indoor memorabilia. The Loch Doon Spitfire (plus the 1-2-1 tour and chat) was a highlight. Very good Glider & Airborne exhibits. Great for history buffs or simply to wander..

Wonderful step into history for plane enthusiasts. Lots to see and does well to cater to a lot of tastes with interesting displays and immersive exhibitions. Small but beautifully put together, framing the masterpiece that is the Lock Doon Spitfire. Lots of keen volunteers who are friendly and knowledgeable.

This museum is definitely worth a visit even if aviation history is not your thing.
Apart from the aircraft (interesting in themselves), the social history and the individual stories of people involved were fascinating and humbling.
The story of the Loch Doon Spitfire was told by Peter, a volunteer involved in finding and recovering the airframe. He brought the Spitfire and its story back to life.
As an entirely volunteer run enterprise the museum merits all the support it can have.

In my opinion, a little gem of a place, even on a cold Saturday morning in October. The Spitfire is beautiful, genuinely historic and would be worth a visit on its own. The talk from a member of staff who'd been involved in recovering it was an unexpected bonus.
The Airborne Experience hangar was also a highlight - some stuff I'd never seen before on gliders etc and even a section with some German equipment. Also liked the work on showing exhibits from the home front.
The walkthrough with the mockup of the bomber cockpit (with what sounded like genuine bomb-run audio playing) was surprisingly effective and immersive.
There are other set-dressings and little touches (like the 'unexploded bomb' outside and the air raid shelter) that tell you that the people behind this are passionate and dedicated.
Friendly staff and my 9-year-old liked spending some cash in the gift shop too.

Visited with my 12 year old and 5 year old children. Lovely welcome with the area explained along with some what to watch out fors.
Plenty of interesting things, filled a couple of hours of our day and I dare say if you are even more interested in reading all the info they have at each part or even wanted to take a picnic then you could spend spend good half day there.
Highlight- the spitfire!
Well done to all the volunteers for keeping the place going

Was not disappointed in our trip down from Glasgow, with our grandchildren aged 10 and 7, a cold damp Saturday we were treated to a display of nostalgia. My husband loves Spitfires and the guy in the Loch Doon Spitfire hanger was very informative, as he was one of the divers who brought the wreak afloat a very interesting talk.

Dogs are most welcome at the museum. All we ask is that you show respect to our other visitors and of course clean up anything they chose to leave behind.

Hi,
We are very happy to have dogs on site.
We only ask that dogs remain on a lead, that you clean up after them if there is any mess and that you take care around our other visitors who may be less comfortable around dogs.
Hope to see you soon

Would you say it's wheelchair accessible and are there disabled toilet facilities thanks
Charlie E
Newtongrange, UK23 contribuições
The exhibits on site are held in a number of buildings. Our new buildings are all at ground level with ramped access (RAF Dumfries, Loch Doon Spitfire and Home Front exhibits) with our older exhibits in our Tower which is split across 3 levels with no wheelchair access to the top 2 floors (Ground = Engine display, 1st floor is armoury and miscellaneous artefacts and 2nd floor is mainly a flying control replica).
Access around the site is currently a mixture of tar paths, tar planings and grass.
There is currently no separate disabled toilet.
Our winter site development work will be extending the tarred areas to avoid the need to be on tar planings, and establishing a disabled toilet for next season, but this work is not currently complete.
Kindest regards
