Before the 3rd national lockdown descended my twin brother Stephen and I decided to jump the train down from Kirkby to Liverpool and enjoy a day out taking in the great sites our city is famous for and visiting the great pubs that make our city so popular, walking towards Abercrombie Square you pass this poignant statue dedicated to Noel Chavasse.
Noel Chavasse ( 1884 - 1917 ) was born in Oxford, his family moved to Liverpool were he qualified as a doctor in 1912 ,with the outbreak of world war one he enlisted as an officer in the Royal Army Medical Corp's ( R.A M.C ) and was attacked to the 10th Battalion King's Regiment ( Liverpool Regiment) aka the Liverpool/ Scottish Regiment.
Such was his devotion to the injured he placed himself in terrible danger rescuing and tending to wounded troops in no mans land ,he earned the Victoria Cross Medal twice for his bravery, the highest decorated officer of world war one, it was during the height of the Battle Of Ypres that he sustained terrible injuries that ultimately led to his death on 4th of August 1917 .
The statue which is the work of renowned sculptor Tom Murphy shows Noel Chavasse aiding a wounded soldier, very animated, very well detailed and very photogenic, makes for some dramatic photographic opportunities, the statue is easy to locate on Abercrombie Square.

Located in Abercrombie Square by the lovely little park is this superb statue to Noel Chavasse ,originally hailing from
Oxford ,the family moved to Liverpool were he trained and qualified as a doctor in 1912 and with the outbreak of world war one he was commissioned into the Royal Army Medical Corp's ( R.A.M.C ) and attached to the 10th Battalion King's Regiment ( Liverpool Regiment ) also known as the Liverpool/ Scottish .
Driven on by the devotion to the injured troops he placed himself in terrible danger in this most horrific of conflicts ,such was this medic's bravery that he was awarded the Victoria Cross twice ,during the height of the Battle Of Ypres he sustained injuries that led to his death on the 4. 8.1917.
In my opinion the statue is a monument to all British troops and medical staff who gave their lives for us so we could appreciate the freedom we have today.
Sculpured by Tom Murphy, its such a well detailed statue showing Noel Chavasse helping a wounded soldier, there is also a replica miniature statue to Noel Chavasse in The Victoria Cross Pub on Sir Thomas Street ,location could not be more appropriate as its close to his family home which is now a Blue Plaque Heritage Building on Abercrombie Square.
A wonderful statue ,well worth checking out if you're in the area.

Planning a visit to Liverpool next week, and stumbled across this doing research. this is one statue I want to see in many of the places i plan to go.

Can I correct some errors however, Noel Chavasse was one of 3 men - to have been awarded a Bar to the VC, and 2 of them were Doctors; Surgeon Captain Arthur Martin-Leake, and Captain Charles Upham were the other 2.

I was born and bred in Liverpool, yet it is only relatively recently that the story of this great and heroic man has been widely publicised. There is a small park named after him next to the Liverpool ONE shopping centre and this lovely statue, which is situated near the captain’s former home. However, I agree with other writers, that it really should be in the very centre of the city.

The statue of Noel Chavasse is located adjacent to his childhood home, but is overall a memorial to all of Liverpool's VC winners specifically and more broadly to the city's war dead. Simple but evocative.

Noel Chavasse is a true hero and the statue is a fitting tribute to this extraordinary man.
Born in Oxford were the family moved to Liverpool he trained and qualified as a doctor in 1912 and when with the outbreak of WW1 he was commissioned in the Royal Army Medical Corps ( RAMC) were he was attached to the 10th Battalion King's ( Liverpool Regiment ) aka Liverpool/Scottish.
Through sheer bravery he attended the injured in no man's land at great risk to himself in this most horrific of conflicts were here became a double V C winner eventually dying through injuries sustained during the Battle of Ypres on the 4-8-1917.
The beautiful evocative statue features Noel Chavasse wearing the trademark glengarry cap.
Sculptured by Tom Murphy in Abercrombie Square which is a fitting site for the statue as it is very close to the family home now a blue plaque heritage building in Abercrombie Square.
Well worth checking out.
