In my opinion, this is the best short walk in the whole national park. Some challenge and great reward.

We could not have asked for a better walk and views. We loved this so much we came back at the end of our visit.

Being not the fittest shall we say this was plenty hard enough of a climb for me. However the decent was worse and I can imagine it gets very slippery in wet weather.

Only 400 metres high so not too challenging and the views from the top are excellent. Can easily be done in a couple of hours including plenty time at the top for photos.

It is not a difficult walk, young kids were up there but it is quite long and a few scrambles over rocks on all fours. We started in Keswick and got the small boat across the lake to the start of the walk. When we finished we walked back around the lake to the start rather than get the boat again. It is a lovely addition but takes an extra hour.

Great day out.
One of the best walks in the area. Please, keep in mind that this is classed as 'strenuous'. You need to be confident that you will be able to climb the last bits of the walk. You will need to come prepared with suitable walking gear and clothing.
Once on the top of the hill, you will have some of the best views you can get in England.
We did this starting from the back of the mountain, near the Alpaca farm. There is a wonderful bistro on the bottom of the hill, where lots of people have a refreshment after several hours of walking.
A must visit....

We did Catbells again in October. Usually we park in Keswick & get the launch over Derwent to Hawes End but this time the launch wasn’t stopping as the jetties were submerged ! So we decided to walk from Keswick through Portinscale onto Catbells via Lingholm for brunch. The walk over Catbells was spectacular with excellent views as we picked a sunny day. It’s not too difficult with a bit of a scramble at the top. It’s one of our favourite walks with good views but not too high. If you don’t want to go from Keswick there is limited parking at the start of Catbells or at Lingholm

We had been told about this walk, but never done it, until yesterday!
Yes it was strenuous, and yes it was difficult at odd times, but it was well worth while!
Fantastic scenery to be had all around you, it has to be a must do, but only if you’re feeling fit!

Not just the summit - there are a number of good walks around Catbells.
We have previously done the summit walk, and it's one of my favourites - definitely recommended on a good day. But this time we were visiting on a pretty wet day, and not one for summit walks. We took the lower bridlepath, that passes alongside the mines that used to be all over Catbells. As a relatively easy walk with historical interest it's to be recommended.
Return journey along the lake shore, as we had done with the summit walk.

Hi Lucy - sorry to state the obvious, howevee, it depends where you start and how long you want to walk for.
The walk from Portinscale will take you about 3 hours if you go straight up and take the short return (via the steps downhill from the top) via Hawes.
Hope this helps!!😎

Definitely. Plenty of space for a dog to walk. I saw other walks with their pet dogs and there was no sign of any sheep or anything to be concerned about.

Hi,
I asked a question about parking around catbells and I got advised to park at Keswick and get the ferry across to Hawes End. However I’ve enquired and due to COVID the ferries are running a reduced service very early that I wouldn’t be able to make. So my next question is, is it easy to walk from Keswick lake car park to the starting point of Catbells? Thank you!

At the moment, you will need to drive near to Cat Bells and then see what parking is available. It is a bit tricky to plan in advance. We parked near Manesty. As long as you have an OS map, it is simple to link onto the walk.

Hi,
Could someone please advise me where to park and a postcode if possible. A car park with toilets would be good too.

Hi , there is a small car park at the foot of the hill by a cattle grid . If this is full there are plenty of parking places on all roads approaching the hill. But please avoid double yellow lines as we passed quite a few cars with penalty notices on , on a Sunday. Toilets there are none , but plenty of bushes !!!!

Where do people park and start from on this walk...

We went over on the boat from Keswick to start the walk. There is a huge car park by the lake.

Is this ok for off lead dogs?
TwigsOxford
Reino Unido16.261 contribuições
Some of the paths are quite narrow and have lots of people on them but I think dogs might be better off the lead for the scrambling bits and to find their own way up. It depends I suppose how many people are on the path and how obedient your dog is.

Hi where is best to park my car for walking catbells? Thanks

We went over on the boat from Keswick to start the walk. If you are staying there it’s a good option as you can walk round the lake afterwards if you want to. If you are staying nearby but need to drive you can park near the lake.

We have a 9 year old and an 18 month old. Is Catbells do-able with the 18 month old in a backpack carrier? Would love to do the climb, but the references to some bits being steep scrambles is giving me pause for thought. Toddler is reasonably heavy and am concerned about being a bit off-balance! Thanks.

As long as you’re fit and confident enough, I’d say you’ll be fine. It really isn’t a difficult walk especially if you’re reasonably experienced.

Hi, how difficult is this walk? I would love to do it when we visit in April but we have 2 children age 7 and 9, is it suitable for them ?

The easiest and best way up Cat Bell is starting from Little Town where you just put in £3.00 to an honesty box for parking then walk up to Cat Bell Saddle, then stroll up the gradual incline till at the top. That is the easiest route for kids and the best from benefiting from the constant view of the lake and Keswick.
when you return to Little Town, go in and have home baking or lovely fresh snack, and an ale of course!
