Went here with friends and not a lot of it was open to the public as a funeral was taking place there.
When we were sold the entrance tickets it was mentioned however the man said it starts at 11.00 so we had time to get to the chapel part first, not sure how that would have sat with the many funeral guests who had already turned up !
What we did see was nice and the grounds were pleasant enough but we stayed less than half an hour so not worth the £30 that it cost us

This is a must during a short stay in Winchester. We enjoyed a walk along the river and across the water meadows to reach the Hospital of St Cross. This is a fascinating place, the gardens, church and alms houses are so peaceful and interesting. A beautiful place to see in glorious spring sunshine.

Walked there along the beautifully clear river Itchen. Lovely wak. Buildings beautiful and worth the entry cost to wander around and visit the gardens. Tea shop not open from November.

Beautiful building and grounds and home to a lovely late summer fair. Unfortunately, today I had a very regrettable encounter with one of the members of staff. The children we cycling on the road and I warned this gentleman who was reversing towards us to ensure he did not hit the children who were very responsibly moving out of the way. He became very aggressive and called me one of the worst 4 letter words in front of my young children (and other bystanders). I am sure not the sort of behaviour required of somebody working in such an institution.

This is an interesting and peaceful stop on a walk through the water meadows or up St Catherine's Hill. The church is great and the setting / almshouses look super. It doesn't take long and there's a neat little shop (good mugs and tea towels!). It's definitely worth a visit if you'd like to see a nice piece of history while taking a walk from Winchester. We didn't try the tea room as we'd just had lunch - the tea room is shut over lunch time. You can go by car of course if walking isn't for you!

The title sums it up. This really is a beautiful and peaceful place. The alms houses are beautiful as is the church and the gardens with the pond. It is so well kept.
We walked from the town centre along the water meadows route, past Winchester college, which was beautiful, quiet and relaxing.
Arriving at the hospital, the entrance and grounds really are stunning. There were a number of artists in the grounds, painting and sketching the alms houses, the church & windows views from the pond and garden. Best way to describe it serene. Beautiful.
It costs £6.00 to enter, but I would say it is well worth it, we spent a good 2 1/2 hours. Loved it.

We were recommended to visit St. Cross while staying in Winchester, and are glad that we did. A lovely walk out across the water meadows takes you to this wonderful medieval hospital where the centuries old tradition of hospitality still continues - don't forget to ask for your wayfarers dole of bread and beer! We particularly enjoyed the beautiful gardens. A definite must-see.

It is not clear if you are allowed to park in the lane, but we did! The hospital building is currently closed, but you can see into the courtyard from the gate, and chat to persons running the shop, which is open. The location is interesting, and you can ask for an information leaflet which give the history of this, what would now be called a sheltered housing facility.
The architecture is impressive.

Down a single track road, and the gate to go through is on the right. You can keep going for a walk around the hospital, and you get a great view from the opposite side. T he gate as you go in is worth a look as it looks original, the shop is on your left as you go through you get to see the hospital on your right, church on your left and green lawn in front.

Lovely church, gardens and hall to visit. I enjoyed the kitchen by the hall and a good way to spend and hour having a good look around.

Hi, slightly peculiar question, but I'm a travel photographer and I would like to know which days (and time) are best to catch the hospital in its most active state as I'm interested in photographing the brothers as they go about their work in the hospital (in a nonintrusive way ,don't worry). Cheers :)

Part of the brothers 'housing' agreement is to go to church every morning the service finishes about 10 am. I'm not sure they would welcome intrusive photo's but we went on a guided tour through Historic Houses Association (HHA) & they were fine with photo's then.
Contact them & ask? Some won't mind but some will.

Yes. The number 1 blue double decker to Southampton stops at Saint Cross Bell Inn and it is 100 metres level walk from there. Don’t get on the single decker number 1 - that turns off the main road before the destination.

How may I arrange to visit and learn about St. Cross this summer. It will be to provide background for Trollope's "The Warden"
Thank you for any assistance you can offer me.

Sorry for the late reply.
There are a few Hotels in Winchester and The Hospital of St. Cross is a 1 mile walk from the centre. There is also public transport that will take you to the doorstep.
I should contact them firtst, if you want specific information relating to it's history. They are very helpful.
Hope the reply will assist you.
