We did Birding in Chopta and its surrounding from Late November to Early December. Managed to photograph some good species. Want to say something for future Birders especially those who will go in winter.
1) Carry Long range lens atleast 500/600 mm.
2) Remain prepared to photograph in low light situation.
3) During winter Chopta may not be very productive, Mandal Village or any other lower altitude areas may be better choice for winter.

We visited Chopta in June,19 with our friends from Haldwani. It was a byke tour. Chopta is very beautiful place with immense beauty and charm. It is less crowded and one can Enjoy nature in Its fullest form here. For stay, no hotels or resorts and tents, camps are only options which increase your travel experience. We went to Tungnath temple, chandrashila Peak and Deoriyatal trek. We enjoyed the trip very much.

Halted briefly at Chopta for Tungnath trek. Eatries are of average standard, but food (had Maggi, Aloo Parantha & Chai) served was awesome. Being Garhwali was an added advantage for us as we got spl. Chai, extra butter, good bargain on trekking gears, and above all a big smile on the faces of locals was unmatched.
Will visit again during Summers, for Chandrashilla (it started snowing as we reached Tungnath ❄️🌨❄️💃)

Cons: Could not find one. Neither could find an empty Chips/Kurkure packet anywhere.
The commercialized hill stations like Shimla n Manali would feel more so like Dharavi of Mumbai(no disrespect).
The mighty mountains n the pristine snow makes the whole place look like an image straight out of a fairy tale.
Absolutely stunning landscapes.
Such a serene view of the valley.

It is the start point of Tunganath-Chandrashila trek and trust me in winter this trek becomes a piece of heaven. To be honest Chopta itself does not have much to offer if you are not planning for the trek. If you really want to see snow in winter without trekking head to Auli instead. Also this place does not have electricity so I would not recommend people to stay overnight in Chopta in winter if you have no experience of camping in sub-zero temperature. Better to stay in nearby places like Ukhimath and drive over to Chopta in the morning.
Now coming to the trek....if you are travelling with elders or kids.....please DO NOT ATTEMPT it in winter if the route is covered with snow. It might look easier to climb up but it gets super slippery while climbing down. We did see some people attempting it with kids and that also deviating from original route and taking shortcuts......it looked super risky and one kid also got stuck in snow at a point. You can instead head over to Auli or Dhanoulti to enjoy proper snow with your family. On the other hand if you are a trek enthusiast and have average fitness, do try it out......it is comparatively easy and is a heavenly experience.
There are several shops at the base from where you can rent trek boots and sticks. Use washrooms, fill your water bottles and buy some snacks from here itself as you won't find any shops or shelter on the entire trek route. At the start of the route there were guards checking the number of plastics you are carrying and we were told that we would be fined if we do not return with exactly same number of plastics without leaving anything behind. I really appreciate this initiative as if authorities are not strict then some people will definitely litter and spoil the place. As we started the trek and climbed up the snowy terrain we slowly came to the snowland where we could see snow everywhere. Do check the depth of snow before stepping on to them in case you are deviating from your path to click pics and also do not take shortcuts through the deep snow and instead follow the normal trail as these shortcuts are super risky. Slowly the trees started vanishing and there were rolling slopes of pure white snow with the layers of mountains in the backdrop.Till Tunganath the trek is easy and any moderately fit person can complete within 2 to 3 hours. But after Tunganath the trek starts to get difficult. The slopes are nearly 80 degree, oxygen becomes less and in winter the snow becomes thicker. We literally had to crawl up the snow like a monkey. I could climb most of it with the help of our guide but unfortunately was taking some time more than our boys. So when a 100 or 200 meters were remaining till the peak suddenly the weather became cloudy and it started snowing. At this point our guide asked us to start returning back as it might get riskier if the snowfall becomes heavy. I must tell you climbing up in snow is way more easier than climbing down. All of us including the guide slipped once or twice.....but none of us got injured.
P.S. Do carry some camphor with you as it might be useful if you start having breathing problem at high altitude. Also try to start your trek as early as possible so that you get ample time to hike up Chandrashila. Usually this trek does not need a guide but in case you go in winter and are not so confident with snow you can hire a local guide like we did. In our case our hotel owner only acted as our guide....you can also ask your hotel staffs if they can arrange anyone for this.

Hello! My family is planning to travel to Chopta Tungnath in month of June, We have a pet with us Indian Spitz, We are planning to do the camping at Chopta and trek to Tungnath and Deoria Tal with our pet. Can you please tell how much feasibility is there on bringing our pet to the place and whether it will be safe against the territorial dogs?

Yes,you can bring your pet with you to Chopta and trek.
The trek is a little difficult in winters but since youre going in june, I think it will be fine. There weren't many dogs and since i didn't take any pet with me so i cant really say anything about behaviour of local dogs towards other dogs. They were really friendly and calm with us though.Hope this comment will help you.

Yes, Chopta is open for tourists. Its very cheap in terms of fooding and lodging. Mainly tents and camps are the only options available for stay. You can do Tungnath, Chandrashila and Deoriyatal trekking. Minimum 02N stay is needed.Although state transport bus operate from Haridwar, but it doesnt go Chopta directly. If you want direct access from Haridwar/Dehradun/Rishikesh, taxi is the only best possible option. As per new state govt guidelines, tourists dont need to do test or carry report with them , but registeration is necessary in govt portal. For more detail, you can contact us.
