Managed to get a grab one voucher for Cheeseman which included two nights accomodation and three days skiing.

Snow conditions were not looking too good but we were pleasantly surprised. The staff worked hard and moved snow around to cover icy areas and we had two great days of skiing.

Yhe accommodation was in bunk rooms but we knew that before we arrived. Deal included all meals. Food was tasty and plentiful.

All staff and guests were helpful and polite.

Amazing fun for couples, families and groups of friends

We've been going up to Cheeseman on and off for many years. This year we took our kids (8yo and 5yo) up to stay in the snowline lodge.
What a great place to stay, wonderful atmosphere and with other kids running around our two had a ball. Great skiing to and from the door of the lodge.
It's a club field so facilities are not 5 star but it is very comfortable and clean, sleeping in 4 or 6 bed bunk rooms, the staff could not be more helpful/friendly and we had 30cm of powder overnight, awesome skiing the following day. Kids did lessons and had no issues with the T-bar.
We've already been back up with the kids for another stay, equally as good as the 1st. Highly recommended for families, all levels of skiing and anyone of a generally friendly disposition who is happy to muck in and meet new people. There is a great in-house cook, heaps of good food and everyone chips in with one minor chore each.

I've stayed up Mt Cheeseman at both lodges this winter and highly recommend it. The smaller club field vibe is unique to anywhere else in the world - a not for profit club which is powered by volunteers and staff purely for the enjoyment of skiing as opposed to the commercial profit.

Snowline lodge is very warm comfortable with dorm style beds and shared facilities. It is located right on the field (ie. you ski to it). 3 meals a day are cooked by a residential chief. It seems quite family friendly with lots of kids running around. BYO in the lodge also allows for a few 'adult fizzes' in the evening too in front of the fire after a long day skiing.

Good all round. Congenial staff. Interesting new people often from overseas. Good food choices. Lodge handy to the best of the ski-ing. Many rave about the Snowline Lodge in fact. Cheeseman is a good advertisement for the country. People flock there. Not as much good ski-ing as last year but that was due to my other obligations and not as much suitable conditions when we had time to go. Recommended. Good all round and a lot of ages and abilities go.

If you live in the northern hemisphere and love to ski or snowboard, New Zealand has many choices on both the North and South Islands. Having visited several and working at the one I enjoyed the most I would like to share some thoughts with you. Mt. Cheeseman, located 95 kms from Christchurch on the west coast highway is operated by the Mt. Cheeseman Ski Club. It is a club atmosphere and while you are there you have a duty to perform to contribute to the running of a ski week or weekend you are on. Your duty may be to cook dinner for 70 people. ?!?! It sounds like a lot but you have a crew of 5 or so other skiers/snowboarders to help you. A different crew has already prepared the food for cooking, another crew serves the meal, another crew cleans up the kitchen. And so it goes for many of the other tasks that need to be performed throughout the time you are there. If you are just going up for the day then you have no duties but you pay a little more to use the facilities. The entrance gate from the highway is easily seen. It is an additional 7 kms to the Forest lodge nestled in the black beech trees of Craigeburn Forest Park and then another 7 kms up to Snow Line lodge well above the tree line. The area is staffed by an international group of eager professionals from New Zealand, Europe and North America. They have a full service rental shop. If there are days when weather does not allow use of the mountain for skiing or snowboarding there is many other activities to partake in at the lower elevations including a skating pond, spelunking, hiking or a short drive back to the Springfield Pub for a ping and some fish'n'chips. You can show up a perfect stranger and the first night you are there at either Forest Lodge below or Snow Line Lodge up on the mountain, you will know half the people in the lodge. It is communal bunking and some of your own bedding is required, (sleeping bag), communal showers. A word to the wise. The road up from the highway is narrow and very steep in places. It is well maintained and well signed and you should take care to follow the directions posted. Tire chains are a must in case of recent snow. Check out their website and enjoy.

62 of us booked out Snowline Lodge, ages ranging from 4 years to 74 years. Many of the kids were under 10 and then another group of 14 year Olds, then uni graduates, young parents, older parents and a few grandparents. This is called Wellington week and is filled with people from all over NZ and Australia.
We hire our skis on the way up the mountain and use Smylies transport to get us up the mountain. The road needs chains in winter. We can ski out the door of our lodge. This is kiwi style, not corporate. Everyone does a chore most days. Everyone gets an hours lesson daily and three meals a day. It's bunk rooms with 6 beds per room. The field has two t-bars. It was primo skiing all week. Fantastic fun.

I stayed at Snowline Lodge and it's great to be able to ski straight to the lift from the Lodge. The Lodge itself is basic but perfectly adequate and the food was good. The field is small but has some good off piste. It has 2 t-bars which is good for those who don't like the nutcrackers that other club fields have.

Mt. Cheeseman is my first solo experience driving up & skiing a club field without a chairlift. It is the 8th ski area I visited in New Zealand. As a Canadian who is used to skiing at "regular commercial ski areas", I made sure I have had enough "practice" driving up Kiwi ski field access roads & use of t-bars before I attempted to visit Mt. Cheeseman. It is extremely important for someone to be comfortable in driving & backing up on narrow windy slippery gravel road for a good distance before they attempt to drive up the Mt. Cheeseman Ski Field access road. I was on edge & paid attention to traffic in the opposite direction as far as my eyes can see. There is a good portion of the access road where there is only room for 1 car & extremely difficult to back up as it is icy, windy, narrow, & steep. It is not for the faint of heart or inexperienced. 4WD vehicles is highly recommended. Off-road 4WD vehicles would be best.
The ski field was extremely icy & very windy when I arrived so the t-bar was stopped for 4 times that morning. As the terrain goes from flat to steep to flat, in combination of the icy conditions & my limited experience in using t-bars, I had difficulty holding on to the t-bar when terrain went flat & the t-bar went on a 45 degree angle. I lost the t-bar multiple times & had to ski off-piste beside the t-bar to get back to base. Off-piste was very icy with exposed rocks beside the main t-bar. Ridge t-bar was closed. On-piste skiing was very good. There was very good grooming, rare for club fields.
The best thing about this club field was the friendliness of the ski patrol, staff, & patrons. They were all ready to provide information & help about the ski field, access road, chains on tyres, etc. I enjoyed my first solo authentic "chair free" Kiwi club field ski experience. If it is your first time, be prepared. It is not like going to a regular commercial ski area and you gotta ski like a local but it is so totally worth it!

Just had terrific week staying in on the mountain lodge with everything included - so nice to walk out door and hop on to the T bar.
People from all over NZ here. Really liked the big fire and casual friendly atmosphere of the place
Pretty good coffee in the day lodge too
