I purchased a combo tour to Chichen Itza, Ik Kil Cenote and Valladolid from one of the tour desks at 5th Ave.
They were nice and helpful however gave me incorrect information of what the day would entail. The information I was given stated that we'd be picked up at 7.30 and dropped off at around 19.00.
Yes, we were picked up at 7.30 by a minibus which took us to an office 10min away where there were lots of people from different parts of Playa.
We queued to register and get the stickers (which wouldn't stick to fabric).
We took off at 9.00am in a big, clean and comfortable bus.
In Coba we picked our guide Efrain up. He was entertaining and spoke good English.
Our first stop was Valladolid where we were advised to stay for 20min as the city officials are not happy with the influx of big buses into their narrow streets.
Every tourist got their picture taken by Pauliño, in front of the bus out of all the places. I refused...
Why would Pauliño take those pictures would be revealed on the way back.
Off we were swept into the bus again heading towards Uayma 'to eat and visit the artesan market'
'All the goods you'll see are hand made by the locals' Efrain said 'buy with confidence as they are not mass produced in China'
We stopped to be blessed and purified by the village shaman, were let loose in the market for over 30min while the lunch table was being laid.
Poor food in an off the track concrete canteen.
Next stop Chichen Itzá. The long awaited cherry on the cake which everyone (well I hope) was eager to see.
2 hours you have got guys, I want you back in the car park for 4.00pm.
I knew that 2 hrs weren't enough but hey ho, enough to admire the grandeur of mayan engineering.
Another queue, another briefing, in troduction with the guide. We stood in front of the temple at 2.30pm.
The guide gave us 10min to take pictures.
Chaos, running around, shouting, trying to squeeze a solo snap in a crowd of 100s.
3.00pm, I went to the guide who was leisurely talking on the phone to remind him that he only gave us 10min photoshoot allowance half an hour ago.
He dragged himself nearer and divided us into Spanish and English speakers. I abandoned my camp as soon as he said 'English group follow me'. I volunteered to translate to the rest of the group from Spanish. We followed the Spanish guide, who apparently had mastered fitting all the important bits in 40 min.
THAT'S HOW MUCH ACTUAL TIME WE HAD AT CHICHEN - 40 MINUTES!!!
'Don't buy from the crooks that have converted the grounds into a tasteless bazaar' Efrain warned us not once on the bus.
The magnet that I bought for 80mxp in the artesan market could be haggled down to 3 for 100mxp. I bought some bric a brac for a fraction of what I would pay in Ueyma.
Hop on - to IkKil next. By the time we got into our swimming costumes, hired the life jackets and went down the stairs, we had to return to the bus as time was up.
Felt like a holy ritual of immersion more than swimming.
It was around 5.15 we set off. At some point I heard a bilingual speech by what I would describe a young person sitting their first oral exam.
It was Pauliño, who let us sample the local liquor then distributed small bottles of the same drink with the pictures he'd taken earlier
Many didn't want to buy them for twice its price just because their picture was on it... Posing in front of the Mercedes logo.
We got to Playa at 9.30pm exhausted.
My 5 and 7 year olds heroically withstood the heat, mosquitos and hunger, but I promised them to find a comprehensive guide to Chichen Itzá which we could read together.
At least we have seen it from up close...

Booked a tour on our last day to Los colorades. The tour lady said they were coming to pick us up and then called me 20 minutes later to tell me that they had a confusion on the reservation and now we are unable to go and to go tomorrow after I asked for my money back they offer to take me on another tour which I did not want to go back and refused to give me my money back because they wanted us to go on another tour. I waited an hour and argued with Patricia the head of the tours just to get my money back. If you're going to Mexico do not book with them, they will try and steal your money!!

My friend and I spent a few days in Playa Del Carmen recently and we stopped to chat to a tour guide called Alicia at Big Smile Tours and I could not recommend her highly enough. She was super helpful, not pushy at all, gave us plenty of options, great prices and spoke English really well. Through Alicia, we booked a day tour of sailing at Isla Mujeres and Gold tickets at Coco Bongo (highly recommend both). She also organised a private van for us one day who drove us to a couple of the Cenotes, Tulum Ruins, Playa Paraiso and Tulum town for dinner. Then dropped us back at Playa Del Carmen. It was hassle free, completely on our own timetable, and we didn’t need to tackle the Mexican highways or parking complications. There are heaps of tour huts on 5th Ave but do yourself a favour and book through Big Smile Tours (opposite MAC on 5th Ave).
