Dont take the Charter Boat from Kabetogama visitors center to Kettle Falls

Wonderful MN North Woods experience. Very scenic with a number of trails in Voyageurs National Park. Lots of good fishing in and around the area.

This is a great location if you are taking a boat tour. Otherwise, I preferred the peacefulness of the Ash River area.

Checked this off as my 10th National Park and due to our late arrival we weren't able to explore much, and we didn't have a boat so it really is a lost cause at this park as it's primarily all about the water. The visitor center was closed due to Covid-19 but they had an outdoor spot for us to stamp our passports, so we were happy.

These Precambrian rocks provide an incredible backdrop for stunning beauty. The calm waters are only disturbed by loons, eagles and gulls. Pack a lunch and take a leisurely trip.

This is a 5.5 hour tour that departs from the Kabetogama Visitor Center. The boat is a large covered pontoon that is equipped with clear plastic panels that can be unrolled in inclement weather. The tour takes two hours to get to Kettle Falls, then another two hours is spent around the Kettle Falls Hotel and the dam/falls, and then about an hour and a half to return. Throughout the trip the rangers would slow the boat down when bald eagles or loons were spotted. Apparently because of the shoreline of Lake Kabetogama and the water levels, the lake is not a good nesting place for loons. Our ranger was very friendly, animated and informative throughout the tour, with lots of facts, trivia, science and anecdotal stories. Once you dock at Kettle Falls, you have a chance to visit the hotel and the bar with its sloped floor, or just wander the grounds. We had plenty of time to grab lunch at the hotel restaurant, which many of the tour group did. Others just enjoyed sitting in the sun. After lunch the ranger led us on the short walk to the falls and dam, with more interesting dialogue throughout. The last stop at Kettle Falls was to stop at the trading post and buy ice cream before we boarded for our return, This is a must do tour in Voyageurs National Park.

My husband and I are visiting all of the national parks...this is #44. We are avid hikers and love wildlife. We do not fish. We enjoyed learning about the history of the region and the lakes are very pretty, however, if you don't fish...activities are limited. We joined the Ranger guided boat trip to Kettle Falls and found the trip to be the highlight of our visit. Ranger Paul and Captain Gary enlightened the guests with their knowledge of the area and the resident birdlife. They always made a point to allow us to photograph the birds...especially the bald eagles. We enjoyed lunch at Kettle Falls, ordering the Walleye. The visit also included a short hike to Kettle Falls Dam.
While visiting the Park, my husband & I hiked the Blind Ash Bay Trail, Oberholtzer Trail and the Echo Bay Trail. All the trails were short and easy. The trails offered views of beaver lodges, strolls through boreal forests & limited number of viewpoints. It was just nice to get out and stretch our legs...but nothing to really get excited about. We thought we would do more kayaking, but due to unpredictable weather, we tended not to paddle very far from the dock.
All three visitor centers are informative, well maintained and the rangers are very helpful. I recommend watching the two movies offered at the visitor's center. As we visited the three visitor centers we did see white-tail deer, toads, frogs & rabbits. This park is really best seen from a boat and probably is a fisherman's dream.

This park is secluded... bring what you need. Everywhere you look there is water... beautiful islands... and wildlife. We camped next to the lake and spent the weekend relaxing in nature. I suggest renting a boat. There are also beautiful trails.

Stayed at Voyageur Park Lodge. Staff friendly and accommodating. Rustic cabins offer excellent views of the lake and are secluded from one another.

This is not a park to visit without a boat. We did one of the hikes that is accessible if you don't have one, and while gorgeous, it is nothing compared to being on the water. We camped on the peninsula near the Rock Garden. Besides a 4 mile hike to the overlook we hiked around the Rock Garden. One day we went to beach and then tubed before heading into the river head (towards Gold Portage
) to fish and watch wildlife- lots of playful otters and eagles. Water is chilly even in July but I didn't hear any complaints as kids swam and tubed. The local resorts do not stock a ton of food so make sure to have your meals planned before launching. Beer purchases are a little odd too:) One night we were out so late that we decided to eat at Sandy Point Lodge and had the best customer service and walleye! Our favorite day trip was up to Kettle Falls. Kids loved running around there and seeing south to Canada. The bar/inn was a fun place to relax. I learned a ton about navigation so have a good map on your way up there! We spent the evenings watching for otters and appreciating the quiet fishing holes. Campsites are extremely clean and two large bear lockers fit coolers easily. We went to sleep to the sound of wolves howling after spending hours marveling at the starry sky. Vistor centers are quaint but I wouldn't plan long visits- get back out on that water! So in love with Kabatogama!!!
