This is not a cafe. It’s basically a small apartment that a bunch of cats live in. The lady who rubs it is lovely and speaks good English. When we visited we got there right at 11am when it opened and couldn’t get up to the apartment (6th floor)... thought the lift wasn’t working but she was just running a little late (just wait, she’ll turn the lift access on soon). Some of the cats are hers. Some are rescue cats that are available for adoption. Some of the cats are quite friendly. Some are a bit more reserved and will just sleep nearby (but to be fair, that is what normal cats do). You can buy treats to feed them if u want a few more to come to you (and then u might have competition for your attention). You can also buy drinks and snacks for yourself, but like I said, it’s really not a cafe. But, I feel like it’s a better place to visit than some of the other animal cafes because she’s really not exploiting the animals, just trying to rescue as many as she can, so your money will go to a good cause!

I've been avoiding going to cat/animal cafes in Japan for years now because from what I've seen online (and myself looking in), they seem pretty exploitative and a place where animals are generally unhappy. Well I can tell you right now that Asakusa Nekoen is a place where the cats are king.

The first clue that these animals are happy to be here should be that there are people in other reviews complaining that "the cats are just asleep all the time". Yes... that's what cats do. They sleep. This is an environment where the cats are free to be cats and you get to be near them while they do that. If they want to interact with you, they will! If they don't they wont. Don't like the sound of that? Go somewhere else.

Second clue that this is a sanctuary moreso than other places is that Nekoen takes in older cats and looks after them until they can be adopted by a loving owner. Finally, the owner is a genuinely wonderful lady who cares very much for the cats, and knows each one very well. Her English is excellent as well.

Want a humane cat experience? Go here! Want to prod an unwilling animal for an hour? Take your business elsewhere.

We had an hour here with our two children aged 9 and 10. The cats there were all really cute and the children loved them! They are all rescued and are very friendly which is nice. Many were sleeping but there were lots to stroke and interact with and some of the sleeping ones could be stroked too. We spent most of the time just chilling with the cats and then at the end we fed them some treats which got many of them very excited.

Wonderful hostess as well who made us feel very welcome.

We decided to visit a cat cafe as we were missing our cats back home. Upon approach I was hesitant to enter as this cafe is just a lady’s apartment and you have to take a lift to get there. However, once we went in I did not regret it. You pay 800 yen for an hour which is pretty cheap considering other cat cafe prices. As I said before, it isnt a cafe in the western sense but the lady does sell beverages. We stayed for a full hour playing with the cats. They were all friendly and funny and you could see the love they had for their owner. She even had a charity for abandoned cats in Fukushima, which we donated to. All in all, this place made my day and i will never forget the cheeky cats and friendly owner.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is not a "cafe." There is soda, water, and beer available for purchase, but it's not a cafe or bar; it's basically a smallish living room with a bunch of cats. Asakusa Nekoen is as a place where you can play with some adorable cats, all of whom are rescues. The lovely woman who runs Asakusa Nekoen rescues cats, cares for them, and endeavors to adopt them out (she also speaks excellent English). She funds all this by running this "cafe." When we were visited there were around 15 or so cats, mostly very friendly, with a few that were more stand-offish. Which, well, they're cats, so, yeah. None of the cats were aggressive.

The entrance fee is 800 yen, which I believe lets you play and hang out with the kitties for one hour (which we found to be plenty of time). You have to take off your shoes, and she doesn't allow anyone to go barefoot inside, so bring socks or you can buy a pair of cute cat-themed socks for 150 yen. We thought the experience was well worth the price, given the good cause it supports. But, if you're looking for a cafe, bar, or restaurant this is not the place for you.
