We stopped here, as we did at most fort sites and were lucky enough to see children playing at recess, learning relay racing, hula hoops, etc. The overlook is beautiful, as most areas in Tobago. The monument itself depicts a boat, and the Latvian influence. If you are in Plymouth, it's worth a stop. Free

The grounds were the sites of Fort Jacobus, 1700 Century Dutch/Couronian military establishment. The fort was constructed, at least at one stage, of cut coral limestone. The most visible remnants of the fortification are incorporated in the present Plymouth Health Centre adjacent to the grassy area where the Couronian Monument is located. The original walls are well preserved. Rifle holes are visible on the south and east side of the wall.

Besides the board with the history of the place and the odd-looking concrete structure, there’s not much to this place. There is however a nice view overlooking the sea. If you happen to be close you can just drive by and have a look.

We saw this monument in late March, 2019. It celebrates some of the early history of the area and is worth seeing.

The site of the oldest town in Tobago.Courlanders from Kurzeme - Latvia lived there from 1639-1693. Beautiful monument made by artist Janis Mintiks. Even grass is smelling like in summer in Latvia.

There is nothing here to explain what inspired this very modernistic structure of painted concrete. The monument can be found at the end of a short cul de sac. You will need to look carefully for the signpost.

I enjoyed my visit to the Courlander Monument. It is a brutalist monument erected to honour the Latvians who originally occupied this piece of Tobago. Only of interest to those keen on either Baltic history or modern sculpture.

My husband and wanted to really visit this monument because we are Latvian and feel a personal connection to Courland, the Courians and, as a result, Great Courland Bay.
We arrived on a Sunday morning to see the monument, and maybe the distant choirs singing in church helped the affect. but we were somewhat moved.
The monument is definitely the result of 1970's art symbolizing freedom, but the location with the white picket fence around it is suitably peaceful and respectful. The plaque provides interesting and clear context. The view of the bay is lovely, with pelicans dive-bombing the water, leaving a sense of natural ease.
We ended up spending more time here than we expected. It was a lovely way to start a Sunday.

There's not much to see here. At a point in history the Duchy of Courland (in present day Latvia) held a piece of land on Tobago. The monument here commemorates this presence. The space is neatly kept. Go if you are a history buff.
