It was a wild ride in a 4WD, but only a short distance. Had to go through a long body of water but it was totally fine in a high clearance snorkel vehicle. The walk to the falls is mostly shaded and green, and the falls are just stunning. Water is chilly at first but just swim around for a while and it's perfect. Beautiful scene of huge cliff, gushing waterfalls and lush greenery.

Best fall in Litchfield hands down. Simply stunning.

Drive in is doable in a 2WD SUV assuming it is dry. Not sure if legal - but doable.

Campsites are lovely and shaded with huge firepits and grills at every site. Honour system so take some cash.

The walk in is around 2kms and SHOES and plenty of water are a MUST. The walk us NOT for elderly or physically diabsled as there are some steep climb sections. Toddlers will need piggy backing some of the way,

Beautiful bushland changes from dense scrub to luch rainforest and you are next to the creek most of the way in.

The falls and pool are simply sublime and much less crowded than Wangi.

A must if you are in a 4wd and relatively fit . Take a picnic and make a day of it....

We visited in July and loved it. I did the walk and I’m not particularly fit and the kids aged 9 loved the adventure. The water was cold but our group still had a swim. Next time we would take noodles to float on.

Well worth the trip but sometimes not quite as much water as some of the others in dry season. Nice places to have a picnic in natural surroundings. Road is sometimes closed.

The track there requires a 4x4 high clearance to get there. Not particular difficult except for the water crossing. There is a marker indicating how high the water is. I had to use the binoculars to see it as there is a sign indicating not to approach the water because of possible crocs. It is a long crossing and you don’t see the end as you turn slight left. The floor is quite solid so we drove solidly. Don’t stop or turn around half way. It was 40 cm high but some friends saw it at 60 cm high 2 days before. The water is not really running so pretty safe. Once you get to the falls car park there is a nice but rocky walk to the falls. There is a small water crossing which test your balance. The falls are magnificent and the pool wide, clear water, quite fresh, lot of fish. Bring a picnic. The camping looks great although we did not stay. You can bring camper trailer with high clearance but no caravans. Not really busy as the 4wd challenge limits the number of people coming. Highly recommended!

Camped overnight and the whole campsite has been burnt. Why?? Black, charred and dusty campsite early in the dry season. We were planning to stay longer but not an enjoyable place to camp in tents.

Litchfield makes for a great day trip. We travelled from Darwin and did three seperate walks there. The main places you can swim are beautiful but expect them to be busy. If you want something with less people I recommend taking a 4WD. We drove to a waterfall (sandy creek) that required barely 30mins of easy off-roading and it meant we had the waterfall to our selves. The walk was approx 1.5km one way. It was actually magical.

This was our favourite spot in Litchfield. Great campsite and great falls. The drive in was good and fairly smooth but beaware of the creek crossing and the depth.

From Litchfield Park Road, take the 4WD Litchfield Daly Railroad Road towards Tjaynera (Sandy Creek Falls).

Just over 5Km in, you will see a turnoff to the left to the Blythe Homestead.
It is an early pioneer building built in 1929 and was also the location of an old tin mine.

The homestead still stands today and provides an interesting stopover along the way to the falls.

After visiting here, backtrack to where you turned off and continue a further 3.5Km, veering left towards Sandy Creek.

To the left, you will notice the campground which has fireplaces, toilets and showers.

Directly ahead is the path which provides a pleasant, easy 1.7km walk through paperbark trees and pandanus to the base of falls.

Enjoy a swim in the plunge pool and the usually uncrowded serenity of the falls as this area isn’t accessed by all the major tour companies.
