Lovely views from the cliff tops and look out area.
We stayed overnight in the freedom camping area in our motorhome. It is a well maintained spot and appeared very popular with locals.
Good but steep short walk down to the beach.
Very interesting cliff top formations, rocks, layers of shells high up etc.
Not sure it’s a swimming area. But we did see a few fishermen with surf casters.
Well worth the walk down and steep climb back

We viewed from the look out and wandered down to the sea. Not sure how safe it is to swim there. Diod see some people sitting on the sand that looked like they may have swum

This coast line is truly amazing......the unusual cliff formations were once upon a time sitting on the ocean bed. You can see the fossilized shells within the face of the cliffs and if your lucky - crack open a rock and get it to reveal a piece of fauna or sea life that has been encapsulated for hundreds or thousands of years!!
My grandsons, enjoy looking for rocks that may hold fossils and shells and drift wood.
The beach is only accessible at low tide and you need to be aware that although the geology is fascinating, it's unsafe to walk below the cliffs, as they can be unstable.
Great though if there has been a bit of a slide, then you can access it's fossils!!
You can walk along to Ohawe Beach for some more interesting pickings....the pebbles on the beach range in all sorts of colours and drift wood in all shapes and sizes. Take a dip at the river mouth before enjoying a nice picnic. I just love this coast line.....it's so un-commercialized.

Our family recently decided to complete the South Taranaki coastal walk from Waihi Beach to Ohawe Beach after the recent redevelopment of the walkway down Denby Road in Hawera. It was a lovely (though long!) walk and offered some beautiful views off the South Taranaki coast. We loved seeing the interesting rock formations we found along the way. Recommended as a must-do if you live locally or if you are just visiting. Can only be accessed at low tide, however, and be careful not to walk under the cliffs as these can be dangerous.
