I have already reviewed this necropolis in the other entry describing many advantages and some defects! But here I would like to focus on the frescoes or paintings that can be observed in the ancient tombs! From these paintings you can understand that the life of our ancestors was ultimately very similar to ours! The professions, sports, daily activities and the other various activities of daily life give us an insight into the life of hundreds of years ago, but they also tell us that in practice human activities, albeit with various differences dictated by technology, they remained very similar! Having said that, delve into the Etruscan activities left to us by the ancients, and also let yourself be carried away by the imagination, dear people of TripAdvisor.

My return after so many years inevitably involves positive and negative comparisons. In the meantime they have created a rest area just ahead of the entrance, something from just a short time ago, the ticket for which lasts the whole day and is also used to park in the large and shady car park near the museum. The place is better looked after and they are changing the signage. However, I recommend booking a guided tour; our guide Claudia Moroni was very good, she also accompanied us to the museum and gave us a lot of information and a comprehensive picture of Etruscan art and civilization. Paradoxically, the most disappointing thing was the tombs themselves...I don't want to blaspheme by belittling the sublime value of Etruscan art but the need for conservation has greatly reduced the possibility of seeing the painted walls well, even when there are two consecutive rooms you can see only what is framed by the second arch and nothing of the side walls. At this point we might as well do a reconstruction (which they now do perfectly) to be able to see something more. The glass door that protects the entrance to the tombs is often dirty or clouded by humidity, further reducing vision. The site is however very suggestive.

Bellissimo necropoli etrusca patrimonio Unesco. Ben tenuta, pulita. Tutte le tombe visitabili (22) sono state apprezzate.

La necropoli è vicinissima al centro storico. Consiglio di andare fuori stagione, altrimenti si rischia di perdere tantissimo tempo in coda per scendere nelle tombe (le scale sono strette). Purtroppo molte pitture si sono rovinate nel tempo e, anche se ora ci sono delle lastre che le separano dal pubblico (talvolta offuscate), sono in parte perse. Consiglio anche di andare con una guida che spiega le tombe principali. Mediamente, se si riescono a visitare in gran parte e se non c'è troppa gente, ci volgiono un paio d'ore. Peccato non ci sia un bookshop.

Bellissima esperienza. Non era la prima volta che ci andavo, ma ci sono tornata per gustarmi l'esperienza a pieno, visto che in precedenza avevo accompagnato alunni delle mie classi.
Bellissimi gli affreschi, che introducono in un mondo misterioso per noi e lontano. In pena estate la fatica si fa sentire, ma è tutto talmente bello che la si ignora volentieri.

Siccome l'area è molto estesa e le tombe sono tante vi suggerisco di visitarle con una guida. Noi abbiamo avuto la fortuna di visitarle con Anastasia contattata tramite "Viterbo sotterranea" che è stata eccezionale . Le tombe che abbiamo visitato sono veramente splendide e ben conservate consderando la loro datazione.

Attese inutili davanti all'entrata delle tombe.
Eravamo 30, in gruppi da 5, 5 minuti a gruppo, ci si stava. Ma se il primo gruppo sta dentro 20 minuti, poi arrivano 10 persone di un gruppo precedente e passano avanti, si arriva alla seconda tomba, nessuna presentazione, si entra, si guarda senza capire, dopo 5 minuti "Uscire per favore".
Disorganizzazione totale.
Peccato perché gli etruschi avrebbero meritato.

The tombs are great to see and they are understandably protected, unfortunately the screens are dirty Perspex, not clean glass and some are poorly lit. This compromises the view. There are lots of steps so not for those who can’t manage steps.

The main settlement of the Etruscans was near Tarquinia, before the Romans destroyed it and the area has yielded some incredibly rich tombs. This necropolis is a World Heritage Site but again, is poorly sign posted, there is no car park and it isn't even really clear where the entrance is. We eventually got in and paid our cash (no cards) to explore the tombs.
I think there were about 40 tombs that you could visit and these had proper stairs and the tomb itself was behind a glass door. You could illuminate it once you got there and the idea was to protect the frescoes from light and humidity. Some of the doors had condensation on the glass so you couldn't really see much and some of the paintings were so decayed they were severely open to interpretation. However there were a solid core that still had vibrant colours and designs that gave a glimpse into the people and society of pre-Roman Italy. The engineering involved in building the tombs also showed where the Romans got that particular skill from.
