I was greedy: reserved for 2 of my 6 days of vacay!
nov de 2021 • Família
If you’re reading this review, it means you’re already in the right mindset and interested in a uniquely Oahu adventure. The upfront investment in airfare, lodging and food for my family of four (hubby and I are each 49 & sons aged 18 and 12-going-on-25) left me a little breathless about how we could maximize our experience and not be “vacation poor” with going to an exotic vacation destination but unable to fully enjoy it. We spent seven nights/six days in Oahu. It didn’t take much research to figure out that chain restaurants and sitting on Waikiki Beach is not the Oahu experience I wanted. Anyone raising kids knows the struggle of getting them to “unplug” and enjoy being unplugged. My research led to committing two of our six vacation days with Jacob J. Scarlett of True Hawaii Tours.

WARNING: do not let his warm Matthew McConaughey accent and superbly built physique throw you off—-Jacob is substance beyond measure. He is personable, worldly, engaging, has a fantastic sense of humor, spiritual, patient, and classy. A tour guide being classy? Yes. And let me explain how these intangibles come into play….
Imperfection is part of the human condition. Having someone spend quality time with you/your family as you are hot, tired, and tested by nature may bring out your not-so-glamorous side. Jacob is grace personified. His easy way gently guides you to the fun and joy of dominating your goal. There were a couple times where I was willing to bail or scared but he reassured me I could do it. I’ll never forget the high-five he gave me after kayaking 45 minutes as if I were genuinely his partner and not the weak link. Additionally, and perhaps, unfortunately, both sons were a bit over-confident and over-zealous in adventuring. Jacob had the core strength to save them. From dying? No. He never put us in any crazy situations. But saved from serious injuries? ABSOLUTELY YES!

We approach parenting as a gift from God. This leads to an extremely high standard of care. Jacob earned our 1000% trust in taking the lead of our safe adventure-to-the-max! Emphasis on adventure but thank goodness he knows the ins-and-outs of how to safely experience it. Oahu hikes are not manufactured by Disney. A simple Google News search of Oahu hiking will convince you that safety absolutely needs to come first. He has the experience and sensibility to gauge which adventures fit you while also sharing little treasures of his beloved Hawaii. Favorite candy, ice cream, mid-day snacks, local eateries….all superb without the plastic tourist vibe nor price tag.

One last bit of advice: take advantage of the media package he offers. He is an extremely gifted videographer and photojournalistic with an artistic eye.

Disappointed

Don’t post an itinerary if you’re not going to honor it or follow it. Our guide was cool. I don’t fault him. It was apparent that his boss is not super involved or gives much guidance to his guides. I basically was driven around to different lookout points. Wanted to visit the waterfalls that were listed and to see the botanical gardens that were advertised. I’m disappointed that I spent all that money to just get in and out of a car to look at a mountain or beach for 5 minutes. I wouldn’t recommend this “tour.”

Definitely not recommended at this price point

I arranged a full day island tour with Jacob for our party of 8 adults several weeks in advance. I was asked to provide full payment in advance by Venmo and did so. Jacob discounted our price slightly by dropping the cost of one adult. That brought our cost down to $2800 or $350 per person rather than the advertised $400 per person. We have participated in dozens of guided tours all over the world and are quite familiar. Some of these have involved significant overhead in equipment - buses, watercraft, bicycles, off-road vehicles or included value added expenses such as meals at local cuisine, park entry fees, etc. Our tours have covered a wides range from about $35 per person to many hundreds per person. Although some groups do better than others, most have been excellent at all price points and I can’t think of one that didn’t leave us thinking that we had gained something we would not have without that particular experience. I can say with total confidence that this tour provided the least value per dollar of any we have ever taken. I’ll leave it to the reader to review the website or Tripadvisor description or speak with the owner to gain an understanding of what is offered/promised. Given that, here is what we received.

I received a text from one of our guides the day before, asking us what things we wanted to do. I was a bit surprised at the question since we signed up in the first place based upon an itinerary described on Tripadvisor and I had held phone conversations with the owner to drill down on specifics. But fine, we reviewed some things we knew we wanted to do. We were told to bring water, sunscreen and towels.

Travel arrangements - We were picked up the next morning at 6 am at our hotel by two guides. They were precisely on time and were very amiable. For our 8 adults, they showed up in a Camry and a Corolla. We thought we were expecting a bus or van. So three adults would spend a significant chunk of the day squished in the backs of these cars. Hours were spent driving. At one point, we were held up in standstill traffic as school was letting out. During this 20-30 minute delay, our guide expressed surprise that school was in session. We informed him that school had opened on August 5. Traffic was certainly not their fault but most tour providers know to craft an itinerary with traffic in mind and/or provide comfortable arrangements for passengers if extended seat time is anticipated.

Food - With the 6 am pickup, we were surprised that there would not be the typical cooler in the trunk of one of those cars with bottled water and snack bars. The tour we had completed a day earlier at less than one third the cost provided that. As the day wore on and we became progressively more hungry, we did get to watch over several hours as our two guides both helped themselves to the fruit, protein bars and large bags of nuts and trail mix they knew to bring. While we certainly did not expect them to offer their snacks, it was pretty amazing that they remained oblivious that their guests clearly were not eating even as they would be prompted by their own hunger to grab something else out of the trunk. We were told to expect a sampling of local cuisine at small restaurants unknown to tourists. That would have been welcome but our guides were apparently not in on the gastronomic part of the promised whole island experience. Finally, around lunchtime, we did tell them it was time for us to eat. We ate at The Beet Box Cafe in Kailua, a place we had already heard about from another outfitter. Lunch was on me and not included in our cost. We even paid for our guides’ lunch and they then completely separated from our group throughout the meal. They discussed taking us to the food trucks on the North Shore later in the day - best food on the island, they said. They learned later that the truck they spoke of was closed three days a week and somehow the whole idea of sampling this best food dissipated. That was the total extent of our food experience for an all day whole island tour.

Itinerary - First, we managed only six stops though the listed itineraries seem much more robust. The hike to Lulumahu Falls was first and was the best part of the day. While this was a great experience, we did not require a tour to do this. In fact, some of our party had already completed this hike earlier in the trip. Point is, while great, anyone out there will find this trail after a brief perusal of TA or any trail finder app or website and did not require a guide. One of our group members suggested we go to the nearby ruins and one of the guides had been there before and took us. We then went to China Walls for cliff jumping. After driving there and then hiking to the rocks, we saw that the swells were much too big for any cliff jumping and the guides correctly said it was way too dangerous. We did spend a chunk of the day getting to that point and I was left thinking a perusal of a surf report in the morning by a professional guide would have allowed us to apply that time elsewhere. Later, we did go to Waimea Bay for cliff jumping - again a location easily identified on TA or numerous sites if one was to seek out this activity. In between, we had stops at an overlook by Koko crater to see a blowhole and at Waimanaio Beach by where Obama’s house is being built.

Added value experience - we gained almost nothing in terms of insight into culture, history, geology or the unique flora of the island. We asked many questions but eventually stopped after the majority of the answers we received were “I don’t know” or “I’ll have to look into that”. Again, the guides were friendly, if not especially engaging. They separated from our party at lunch, Waimanaio Beach and at Waimea Bay for substantial portions of time. Their general friendliness and the beauty of the island are what keep this review from not being lower.

In summary, this tour is absolutely not in line with similarly priced tours in Europe, the US or Asia. At a MUCH lower price point, it would be satisfactory but even then with some deficiencies that could not be overlooked. We could have rented a Suburban for the day (or taken Uber), found the waterfall trail, gone to the first listed cliff jumping location on most websites, found the blowhole and ruins or similar, selected our own eateries on Yelp and planned a route to accommodate traffic with little extra effort, enjoyed far greater comfort and have saved over $2000 for the day. Bottom line, this was not the type of tour expected by experienced travelers at this price point. YMMV.

Addendum: I did speak with the owner, Jacob about our experience. He explained that their van had been recently stolen and would take our constructive criticism into consideration for future tours. We did not ask for, and were not offered any partial refund.

Just when I thought I’ve seen all of Hawaii...
nov de 2020
True Hawaii Tours made me realize I haven’t even scratched the surface! Listen, I’ve been to Hawaii a dozen times but booking Jacob’s tour made me realize that I barely knew anything about Hawaii. He made me and my girlfriends feel like we were locals instead of tourists. I also wanna acknowledge his excited energy at 5AM which was, beyond me. He was so excited for our tour that all of us, who were half-asleep and half-grumpy, resonated his excitement for our trip! He’s very knowledgeable about his hometown and was also nice enough to carry some of our extra luggage.

PS:I highly recommend having their guides take videos & photos of everyone in your group! They all know the great spots!
