My wife and I wanted a quick overnight getaway near our home in Southern California. We had a gift certificate for a restaurant in Seal Beach (Walt's Wharf - a WONDERFUL place with EXCELLENT food and service - but that's another review) and looked for someplace nearby. We prefer to stay in B&Bs and came across an alleged B&B: Sunset B&B. I should have known from the fact that it took three phone calls before I got a response to make a reservation that we were in for an ugly experience. The next clue was the "Why are you bothering me?" attitude from whomever I spoke with on the phone. Clue #3: Although the website reservations said all rooms were available on our designated day, I was told only room number 2 was available. I was also told that all rooms cost the same price which I found curious as some rooms were suites, some were kings, and some were queens, and the website refered to a range of $215 to $325 per room. Nevertheless, we headed down on our appointed day, arriving at approx. 3:20 p.m. We had told the person with whom we made the reservation that we would be there between 3 and 4. When we arrived, the office was locked tight and there was no one to be found. We called the number on the office door and went to voice mail, leaving our cell phone number. We then called the second number on the office door and were greeted with a gruff "Hello!" When my wife asked "Is this the Sunset B&B?" she was told yes, and that we should call the first number, but "oh, never mind, I'll call her or I'll come downstairs." Some time later, a gentleman came downstairs and showed us room number 3 which had the key stuck in the door. When we questioned him about the other room, he said the people had just checked out and that room number 3 was a king and a better room. "Fine," we thought, "we will be greeted by the proprietor(ess) shortly." But this was not to be. The website and brochure promised a "sunset wine and cheese reception." As you can guess, this never came to pass. We went next door to a liquor store and bought some fruit and cheese. While we were enjoying our refreshments, we were treated to an explosion of profanity as the same gentleman who showed us to our verbally abused his dog, calling him every name in the book and then some. We were beginning to think that being here might have been a mistake. But we had a dinner to enjoy, so off we went. The website and brochure boasted of turn down service, but, well, as you can guess, this never happened either. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner, but not the rest of the night. In spite of being told that there was only one room left, it appeared that we were the only guests, other than the permanent tenants upstairs. I must say that the rooms were large and clean and well appointed. However, the hotel is right on PCH and the incessant traffic noise is unbearable. I don't think we slept more than an hour or two that night. And, at 4:30 a.m., we were treated to the very loud departure of the previously mentioned gentleman and another tenant. The website and brochure also refer to a "gourment continental breakfast." Of course, this never materialized either. So, after a hugely disappointing getaway, we packed up our things left. What remains to be seen is what, if anything, will be charged to the credit card we used to guarantee the room. We will update this review with that experience. …
