We went up on the first tram of the day in fear of it being too hot to walk this trail, but it wasn't uncomfortable to walk around in. Be prepared for the air to become a bit thinner the higher up you go but it's not unbearable, just take it easy if you're not used to such conditions. The walk itself was lovely, having a combination of vast views and walking through the woods, there was plenty to see for everyone. Make sure to bring plenty of water for this walk, it'll be needed on the final stretch before you reach the top, trust me... But it is all worth it as the view over Albuquerque was breathtaking ( and that wasn't from the walk haha).
On route up to the top or on the way back down keep your eyes peeled for some fossils as well, it was interesting to see such thing so high up... Really makes you think about the history of the location.
For getting up there, if you're going via the tram make sure to check if they are running on the day because weather conditions can affect when they run.

Be in good shape and altitude acclimated prior to going up the La Luz. Great switchbacks and wonderful views of ABQ along the way and from the top (where there's a good restaurant). Don't try the entire trail without good boots an, water and a snack or two. It'll be slippery after snows and rain - and there are places to have long falls and in some places the trail is very narrow.

Trail is uphill the entire time and pretty strenuous. The last 2 miles go into overdrive on the incline but the views are well worth it.

This trail is 8 miles long if you care to do the whole thing. Even if you only hike a mile up you will see the stunning views. The temperature is a little cooler with the higher elevation, but much of the hike is in direct sunlight, so make sure to wear SPF or protective clothing. For active people, it is not overly taxing, the incline is gradual.

Like all the trails rising from the city of Albuquerque to the top of the Sandia Crest, the La Luz trail climbs at a significant rate. You may need to pace yourself if you're coming from sea level. No need to worry, you're not committed; you can just go as far as you can handle and turn around and come back. Have your camera ready; there's a new aspect and a new view around every corner, some up at the mountain, some back out over the desert, and some of just the woods you're in. Beware of ice in the shady spots in the winter months, especially on steep grades where a slip can go very wrong.

This is one of the nicest trails in New Mexico, which is why there are always lots of people hiking it. But it's great to go a few miles on it or all the way. Beautiful views and cooler temps. Check it out.

This was an awesome hike. Went with my 10 yo son. He is pretty fit and does a lot of long-distance trail running with me. Started at the base of the Sandia tram. Bring water and food. It is long and lots of switchbacks. Will do at least 4-5 rock crossings. Little steep but easy to traverse. Pretty cool to see the vegetation change as you hike up. Will get hot early, so starting early is ideal. We began at 6:30 AM. Stay closely on trail until you get to La Luz. We got lost multiple times and had to backtrack. Remember to take the hard right about 2.3-2.5 miles into the hike from the base of the tram. You will reach a connector to La Luz and then you cannot get lost. At top of La Luz go to the crest. Another 300-400 ft elevation change but wonderful.

We have read that it's a popular hiking trail located on the west face of the Sandia Mountains near Abq . It begins at the La Luz Trailhead and proceeds to either Sandia Crest or the Sandia Peak Tramway. Curiosity prompts us to check it out even though we know that we may have some problems with the 8 mile strenous trail on our first attempt. We are prepared to hike as far as we can and enjoy what we see and accomplish. As we hike we are treated to ever-changing views of cliffs and trees and wildflowers and some are amazing with many are unfamiliar. It is great trail which is moderate at the beginning but gets challenging as it elevates and the elevation is gradual at 150 ft as we climb. After 3 hours of climbing and almost three quarters of the way we decide to turn back. It was beautiful indeed!

Is there any place to stay at the top? I have a conference until Sunday noon in January and am hoping to hike to the top, stay and hike down on Monday morning. Is that a reasonable plan??

There's a restaurant at the top but no place to stay. Recommendation; hike to the top, take the tram back down to your vehicle. BUT: please be aware that there will be snow and certainly ice on the hike to the top and that micro-spikes are necessary. It's about 13.5 miles so will take about 7 hours - so you'll be hiking in the dark the way you have it planned. I could not recommend hiking the higher elevations on ice with a narrow trail and precipitous drops in the dark. Maybe an out and back from the bottom would be a better choice.

We are planning a trip to the area in Feb. How accessible and hikable are the trails in the Sandia Mts that time of year?

Hi, glad you’re coming to see our beautiful state and getting out to hike. I hike in the Sandias all year round, but I grew up in Minnesota. Please keep in mind that the sandías at the top have an elevation of 10,300 feet, so bring good boots and gloves because it gets cold and windy up there. Do not bring running shoes or sneakers. Boots, preferably with Vibram soles. There will be snow up there, but it will be beautiful and the trails are pretty well groomed, but it can be a little rocky. But if you hike after 11:00 am, it will be sunny, crisp, and beautiful. Have fun!!

There are 2 choices. You can start at the tram and take a trail 2 miles that connects to the LaLuz then head up from there. Or, you can go to the formal trailhead which is off tramway. Going north on tramway, go past the stop sign where you would turn right to go to the tram. Continue on tramway and take the first right turn onto a paved road that winds up toward the Sandia's. As you approach where the pavement ends, there are 2 large stone pillars, turn right and continue up the winding road until you reach the parking lot.

My wife and I are planning on taking the tram up and hiking La Luz Trail down. Is it approximately 7-8 miles down and does it end at the beginning of the tram.

Hiking down may be more difficult than going up. Very tough on the knees and the boulders down the switchbacks are tough. I recommend that you have walking sticks for balance. The La Luz ends 2.6 miles from the tram base. You would hike the lower tram trail back to the tram. Note, it is hotter at the bottom than at the top and the sun will be over the mountain in the afternoon so make sure that it is not an extremely hot day.

Hi All,
Is La Luz train the only trail in the mountains? Are there more trails on the peak of mountains?

Wow, I'm REALLY late in seeing this question! But hopefully I can add some info. As the other repliers have said, there are a large number of trails in the Sandia Mountains, both that go to the top, and also many that meander through the hills but never go "up". Also, I somewhat disagree that La Luz is the most popular. Embudo Canyon and Trail, Elena Gallegos are both exceedingly popular, and an hour car ride around to the east side yields a literal treasure trove of trails that are cooler and tree-lined. Enjoy!

Howdy! I'm planning a trip to Albuquerque and I'll be by myself. Are there usually folks on the La Luz Trail? Would I be passing people, or more likely, would people be passing me? I'd probably hike it on a Friday or Saturday. I'm from Galveston Island which is definitely sea level, over 50 in pretty good shape and am used to hiking in arid environments - lived in Tucson for 4 years.
Thanks!
