We followed up our long visit to the Fairbanks Museum in Saint Johnsbury, VT, by visiting Dog Mountain and the Dog Chapel. The Dog Chapel has an inspirational yet sad history. Stephen Huneck, master woodworker, carpenter, and artist, built the Dog Chapel after realizing his black lab Sally helped him to recover from a serious illness. Sadly a lifelong battle with depression defeated Huneck, leading to his suicide. His wife passed away three years later.
The good people who loved them stepped up to keep Dog Mountain and Dog Chapel going. The site is a celebration of Huneck’s love for companion animals. The site is well-signed off route 2. A maintained dirt road leads the visitor to the parking lot.
I had read that the Dog Chapel will make you cry. Seeing all the notes people left to celebrate their pets made me grab a tissue in mere seconds. It is an overwhelming reminder of how much we humans love companion animals. I left a note about my own best furry friend while growing up, a goofy beagle named Cleopatra who I picked out when I was four. She remained with our family until my second year of college.
Huneck’s playful carvings adorn the Chapel. The stained glass windows are from an actual church—Huneck customized them with his own dog imagery.
Once I dialed down the tears, I visited the galley and gift shop. I could not resist the “No Dogmas Allowed” doormat nor could I resist snuggling with the large old Black Lab who hangs out at the store.
Great, I’m crying while writing my review. The Dog Chapel is a super special place and well worth a detour.

Stop by here with my family while exploring Vermont. We were on vacation so we didnt have our dog. There were several dog owners there with there pets. They have gift shop with a few dog centric things and a chapel. The walls of the chapel are covered with memorial notes that owners have left. (you can leave your own) There is no cost but they do take donations. It is kind of out of the way. Have to travel a short dirt road to get to it.

What an inspirational spot to remember our dogs that are no longer here with us and have crossed over the rainbow bridge. They bring us such joy and unconditional love, it is nice to know we have a special place to honor them.

The dog chapel is a peaceful and inspirational place for all dog lovers to visit. We were there just a few days ago and I have already shared our photos with so many people and everyone has been amazed and ready to make the eight hour trip to visit it themselves. He is also the author of the book The Dog Chapel which I have given to a couple of friends whose dogs have passed on.

Well decorated in dog furniture. Thousands of notes remembering dear departed four legged friends. It is a bit sad to read all of them but go there and bring your dog. No leashes required and there is a pond right next to it..

I stumbled upon this 4 years and this year just had to return. Having lost 2 of my dogs this year I felt like what better place to feel a connection. The moment I turned the handle on the chapel the flood of emotions was overwhelming. There is so much love inside these 4 walls words can not even describe. What a beautiful tribute from an artist so troubled in his own life. No doubtebly to the furry friends that tried to ease his pain here on earth. May all that cross the threshold feel the love of every animal- not just those that you were blessed enough to have in your life but to all friends that wear a furry coat.

Been coming here since 2005. Five of our dogs have passed through the doors of this chapel. It's a sacred place, a place to pray, a place to rejoice, a place to mourn. If you consider your dog (s) a member of your family, this is a must to visit.

Dog Chapel was the vision of the late artist Stephen Huneck, who built it on his land in Saint Johnsbury, VT, to celebrate the special bond between people and their best friends. The walls are completely covered in hand-written memorials to pets who have left their human companions' lives. There is an adjacent gallery that sells his art. Obviously dogs are welcome. It's a very touching place for any dog lover.

No dogma allowed at Dog Mountain. It's a little slice of heaven on earth where dogs run off leash and are free to enter the chapel when ever they want.
The chapel was so sweet. I was emotional as I looked at all the handwritten notes pasted to the walls as a loving memory to the dogs that have passed from this earth. This place is perfect for anyone who loves dogs.

Do they serve/allow alcohol on site? Might be fun to have a glass of wine with our picnic.

I have no idea about the liquor rules at Dog Mountain. Their website has seemed user friendly so that may be another way to check on their feelings about liquor brought to the park. When I visited in Fall 2015 I know all they would talk about was how dogs could have fun on the property, relax in the chapel. I found this place on the spur of the moment while traveling, it has been a fine memory ever since.
