Dry knowledgeable docents. Tour of the house is great. Just make sure you check days they give tours and reserve in advance. The grounds may be open for a hike but the house is only open on certain days. Not sure this is clear even on Trip Advisor.

I attended the Mills Mansion Open House on a Saturday night during Christmas and it is such a treat. The whole mansion is decorated to the hilt and is a self guided tour where you can take your time and enjoy the decorations while the docents in costume explain the holiday season of the Mills family.

The house was decorated and lit up for the holidays and I got to tour room by room at my own pace enjoying all the Christmas trees in the Library, Main Hall and Dining Room. In the Dining Room, the table was set for a formal Christmas dinner and drinks and was very elaborate. The tree in the Library made the room cozy and intimate. The kitchen was set with all the fine china and delicious foods that the family and friends would enjoy during the holiday.

The Hyde Park Quartet played the whole time I toured the house and that added a nice touch during the holidays. The Open Houses during the holiday season in the Hudson River Valley should not be missed. They offer an inside view of how these families lived and entertained during the holiday season.

I got to talk to many staff members and friends I have gotten to know over the years when visiting the mansion and commented what a wonderful job they did decorating the mansion.

Do not miss the Holiday Open House in 2024!

We went for the Gilded Age Christmas exhibit. Absolutely stunning mansion. It was a self-guided tour but there were docents in every room to share information and answer any questions. We actually liked this aspect versus a guided tour because it allowed us to linger as long as we liked in each room. Lovely gift shop. Beautiful view of the Hudson River. Highly recommend seeing this at Christmas time. You can reserve a time slot to enter but unless they are overwhelmingly busy, we were told they will not turn you away.

This Gilded-Age estate actually inspired the Vanderbilts to build one of their own nearby. The grounds are beautiful and extensive, but to make your visit worthwhile you should take the excellent tour of the interior. The home's furnishings are original, so you really get to see how the ultra-rich lived.

Great peak into life in the early 20th century. The tour guide, Zack, was excellent. Try to get a themed tour if you can. It’s longer and more interesting! One caveat is don’t visit when it’s hot and humid if you’re sensitive to heat. There’s no air conditioning except in the gift shop.

This is a magnificent mansion with a storied history in a beautiful state park. You need reservations for their excellent tour. Our Guide, Joe, was outstanding. Most furnishings in the house are original to the family. The tour lasts an hour, grounds are beautiful! Nicely stocked gift shop.

Please visit and support!!

I stayed in Rhinebeck for the weekend so that I could enjoy the two summer garden tours that the Staatsburgh Historical Site runs. We toured the Village of Staatsburgh and how the Mill's Mansion staff put their mark on the town and then we took the Secrets of the Estate tour, which showed up the areas in the back that showed two sites of mansions of the Mill's relatives, The Point and the Lee Estate.

Both tours are very interesting and give insights to life back in the late 1890's when the families were all living here. The families all lived here through the Gilded Age and then through the 1920's before the Great Depression put a damper on this type of lifestyle.

The Village Tour shows the visitors the beautiful St. Margaret's Church and its elegant stained glass windows dedicated to the Livingston family. Then you tour about five blocks of the neighborhood and visit the homes of the former servants and see nicely landscaped gardens around the town.

Both tours are free and it is one of the best deals you will get in the summer months. Don't wait too long as they fill up fast.

We loved our tour and wish more people knew about this state historic site. It is only a few minutes from the Vanderbilt estate and, per my mom, much prettier.

The mansion is a beauty and our guide, Joe D’Angostino (apologies if I messed this up), brought it to life. My mom and I found it so interesting that we did more research when we left. Fascinating historical family that dates back pre-Revolution and continues on to this day.

We were fortunate that we took the tour at the end of the day, and we were the only visitors. It also kept me from buying out the lovely museum shop. I “only” left with a stylish hat, necklace and earrings 😆

I was able to visit Staatsburgh for two separate weekends in December when I was in the Hudson River Valley. Once the Friday night before for an elegant, masked cocktail party fundraiser for the mansion, which was really nice.

Everyone was so beautifully dressed and masked for the evening. It was hard to talk to people with their masks on. It was really elegant because everyone was dressed to the nines and the food, and the music were excellent. The caterer did a nice job of passing appetizers around a very packed room. There was just enough where you were content but not full. The band was excellent but the room was so packed with people that there was no room for dancing.

The next week I was able to come back and see the house when it was not so packed. The Dining Room had a 'mask' theme that I thought was just for the party and was so well designed. Take a peek in the Butler's Pantry to see the Christmas meal that was being prepared.

The rest of the house was done with garland and bows with a Christmas tree in both the Foyer when you walk in and the library which made it more intimate. The tour guides let you tour and linger as long as you want so it is nice.

The grounds were slushy so don't linger outside too long but do visit their gift shop before you leave. There are a lot of interesting things to buy here.

We happened to visit the same weekend as the car show (which was huge!), so all the tours were self guided.

The house was stunning and even though we had no tour guide, there were a lot of volunteers who were very knowledgeable and helpful.

We learned a lot and enjoyed the experience.
