Super spot for a hike. Short and fun with lots of rocks! The staff were very friendly and helpful. We took our small dog through the rock trail and had to carry her some of the way. Best to go late summer as I might imagine it could be a bit wet in spring. Parking is close by. And various other trails to enjoy. There was a bit of smell near the entrance that was fowl.

When checking out this site we saw the Chasm was rated as easy. But the amount of rock clambering both in and back out seemed more difficult than easy to us. Perhaps part of that is being shorter with shorter legs and being of an age with awareness of how easy it is to twist an ankle. It was still interesting but more time was spent watching where to place our feet. We also did the Little Purgatory section which did have some more walkable trail for the most part. It looks like the return portion of Charley’s Loop might have been easier. We kept a pretty decent pace, one short stop, and took us about 50 minutes without stopping at the named rock formations (it was rather hot and a bit humid). Not for weak ankles or poor balance. The cost of parking at $20 seemed a bit excessive for the time spent. But the ice cream truck in the parking lot did a lot of business.

Went here in early September. It was extremely crowded (hard to find a parking spot). The trail back to the chasm is very rocky/hilly. It takes time to work yourself down to the bottom and you can come back on up on the non-rocky side.
Very unique as you are right on top of rocks.
Went with some older adults in early 70's and they managed to work themselves down the rocks.
Highly recommend park to visit.

Gorgeous views and fairly easy trails, some rocky areas may be difficult for some. Lots of loop options and we’ll marked trails. Only downside is very crowded and out of state parking is $20. We parked by 9am, when we came out at 11am there were no parking spaces at all.

I love going to Purgatory Chasm. Even when the parking lots are full, there’s still plenty of trails and it never feels crowded. Great place to walk your dog too

First time visit this past Sunday. We went on the Chasm Trail. This is a state park and there is a $5 fee for parking state plates, $20 out of state. The visitor center was open for rest room with restrictions on numbers, monitored by staff. Suggest Unisex as females wait and just use one at a time. Area is well maintained. There is a picnic area and a few different trails. There should be some consideration when doing the chasm trail for physical ability and health. While there was a great deal of uneven terrain and steps up and down from rocks that may be a couple feet in a few spots, it is easily done for most. I would avoid chasm trail if balance is an issue, some people used walking sticks to help. There are ample areas to just let quicker parties pass. Trail is marked with blue stripe at intervals on rocks. I would highly recommend this park for exploration, exercise and getting outdoors. There were other trails that people walked their dogs.

What an awesome adventure to climb and hike at Purgatory Chasm. Our family thoroughly enjoyed it! Be prepared by wearing hiking shoes or sneakers...you will be climbing up and over rocks and down some areas that are a bit steep. My kids ages 9 and 12 loved it! Many nooks to explore and jumping from boulder to boulder was thrilling for them. It was a beautiful day when we went...warm but when you're hiking at the Chasm it's quite shady which would make it extra comfortable on a hot day. I look forward to visiting again in the fall to see the turning of the leaves and exploring more.

We enjoyed the park although it was little crowded on that day. I was little disappointing as our Rhode Island license plate was charged $20 (4 times more) than a MA license plate ($5) each. I believe MA license plates are not being charged extra at RI State beaches and parks. Please reconsider.

Took family and grandkids, 3 and 16 months.
Rocky, and a little steep at times, took turns walking slow, and holding kids at times. Weather was in 80s, just lovely, take water and walking shoes, has a nice play ground for the kids, packed a lunch for picnic after hike, had lots of picnic tables.

Spent several days in New England with a friend, geocaching to all the best places. We got here later in the day than we had planned but I’m glad we still stopped by. I wold recommend planning at least several hours here. The 0.5 mile loop isn’t your usual hike! Put on your sturdy boots and plan to be a kid climbing the rocks in the Chasm. This could be a dangerous place for kids (and adults!) so proceed with care. But DO get in there and get a good look!

Considering visiting this site but wondering how accessible this is for someone in a wheelchair? Thanks.

Not accessible at all as far the going they the rock formations. There is a path to push a wheelchair around but it’s not very far and you don’t see any of the rock formations.

What types of rock formations are evident in the geological composition of the chasm?

If you googled your question... you would probably get your answer there in more detail. It was beautiful and interesting.. it was a natural chasm , not man made! That’s all I know... I was there to hike.

Does anyone know when the trail will be open this year? I've never been before and was hoping to go with some friends in early April.

Try googling it , check their website... they may list hours there.
