Hard to find the access road but we did. A long, narrow, dirt, road, and you have to drive through a creek. If you have a low seating car, don't go, we saw a car fender near the creek. Limited parking. Long strenuous hike with uneven, rocky trails. It was worth the view of the falls. Surprisingly it only took 45 minuets to hike out of the trail but if felt longer going in.

Beautiful waterfall! After hiking 3 miles from the entrance (you could drive further in but had to cross a creek and it was too deep for our car to cross), it was well worth the hike! The Blue Hole falls are on the same trail, definitely a two for one and would highly recommend!

A great hike with two beautiful waterfalls to enjoy. The return hike is TOUGH as the last bit is entirely uphill and quite steep. But completely worth it.

Well shaded hike to small falls. No real directions other than follow the walking path. Drive in requires crossing small creek in your car and 1/2 mile to small parking lot. Trail starts there & is rugged to & from the falls that are not that good. About a mile to falls & a mile back to car if you can find a parking spot. One time only venture.

This was one of the most beautiful parks we’ve ever been too. Did the high shoals loop which is marked as strenuous and it was, but not too much that we couldn’t complete. We are I. Our mid 50’s with our 16year old. The view at the top is worth each step. The way down is long but not too difficult.

We took our dog for a hike to Blue Hole Falls and High Shoals Falls near Hiawassee. From GA-17/75 near the turn for Brasstown Bald, turn onto Indian Grave Gap Road, which turns into Forest Road 286. There is an auto ford near the beginning but should be passable in most cars except in very high water. The trailhead is in about 1.5 miles. The green-blazed High Shoals Falls trail descends to High Shoals Creek and crosses on a footbridge. In another 10 minutes or so, pass by Blue Hole Falls. A spur path on the left leads to a viewing platform. Past here, the trail switchbacks down and ends at a viewing platform for High Shoals Falls. Both waterfalls are really beautiful and this makes a great hike of moderate difficult (all uphill on the way back). It's popular so try to arrive early as parking is limited.

The road to the falls was not even accessible, cut off by deep running creek across the road. Did I mention deep? I saw a truck go before me, and it bottomed out. No way our min-van was going to make it across. No way any normal vehicle was going to make it across. A little maintenance would go a long way for a place of such supposed beauty. A supreme disappointment.

Starting early is a good idea for this very popular hike. On the way in we passed one group of 4 on their way back. When we started our return hike, we passed several other groups of hikers who were on their way to the falls. The surface of the trail is covered with tree roots and stones, watch your step. When we got back to the parking "area", there were cars, SUV and pickup trucks parked up and down the right of way. IOW get there early.

Great hike and views of the falls. Trail is well marked, adequate parking. Just be aware you have to drive through a small creek to get to the parking area.

Can we bring our dogs?
My advise is to go early on a weekday. Yes, dogs are allowed on a leash, but with no one on the trail that early we were able to unleash our dog and he along with you will enjoy your hike so much more.
How long is the trail? How long it takes for round trip?

The posted sign said that the High Shoals trail is 1.2 miles with moderate difficulty. There is also a sign stating the trail is closed temporarily due to the High Shoals Creek bridge being out. We hiked to the creek and turned around. I think it took a little more than 1 hour. The creek itself is not very deep and it appears others have crossed it on rocks and planks beside the bridge. I feel like we had hiked at least a mile before turning around. I would allow 2 hours if you plan to cross the creek to find the waterfalls.

Did you hike this trail just a few days ago? I noticed a road closure notice from late May mentioning a landslide had caused the road going to the trailhead to be closed? Did you go another way than Hwy 75?

I really don’t know what road
we were on, so sorry.
My son was navigating. We crossed a creek and went up a hillside that was pretty steep. We were there mid May.

follow hwy 17/75 out of Helen ga approx. 11 miles to Indian Grave Gap rd. on your right (FS 283) If you get to Moody Hollow Rd, you've gone too far. Take fs283 approx. 1 mile up the mtn to the pull off. Follow the main trail and you'll see some trails that venture off to the left that will take you to the top of the falls. Note: these trails are not maintained like the main trail is. Be careful and Happy hiking!

Hello! I was wondering if the water levels are up this time of the year ?
Hoping to find info on the best time when the flow and falls are roaring.

Hello, we hiked this trail about a month ago and the falls were gushing. We've had a lot of rainfall lately, so the rivers are flowing. This is a wonderful hike. Check out our pictures. Happy hiking!
May I ask how well this trail is maintained? I am concerned about snakes sense they are mentioned in a previous post. Thanks!

We hiked this trail in March 2017. The trail is maintained fairly well, but as other have mentioned , there are a number of steep switchbacks and roots and rocks you will encounter. We didn't see any snakes this day, but you are hiking along the river so take that into consideration. Carry a hiking stick to be on the safe side. Happy hiking
