We visited several of the local museums and found this one the most interesting. The exhibits were very good as was the interactive picture table, we wanted to take home the garden furniture and the hatstand, they were beautiful. We can highly recommend a visit here, just a shame there was no cafe. !

We live in the Gorge and buy an annual pass. This is our first visit to the museum of Iron since it’s update. We were very disappointed. First, the car parking charge has been increases to £3. Why?are you actively trying to discourage visitors?
Inside, further disappointments. No seating for those needing to rest for a few minutes, and the cafe has gone. We quite enjoy having a look around followed by a coffee. A nice way to spend a winters afternoon.
Now the updated museum. It is truly awful. Before the revamp, there were lots of interactive exhibits, like a huge layout of the valley, with all the pools and forges shown and explanations of all the different items made all down the valley. There was a running film of people who played a significant part of the iron industry, who explained to anyone with a few minutes to spare what their role was and what developments were made. There were working models of engines. There were so many excellent examples of things made from iron, from the magnificent gates for Bradford markets, to humble pots and pans. They have all gone, to be replaced to extremely dull information boards with the odd item in a case. The whole thing just doesn’t flow. There is little seating and absolutely nothing to engage children.
We can see no reason why we should ever visit this museum again. Our small grandchildren would be bored in seconds, yet they loved it before it’s update. We believe in encouraging them to learn about the past and what an amazing area we live in. This ‘updated’ museum has become everything a museum should not be. Dull and unengaging. We were round and back out within 30 minutes. We have spent a good half day here, frequently, in the past. The updated museum desperately needs updating!

We really enjoyed this museum. Its is well laid out and extremely informative. I would like to go back and do another tour to take in more of the information on offer.

Quite a lot of space to wander around. Some interactive exhibits and a fair bit of reading. The place felt a bit sad on a damp grey day with Aga just having closed nearby and a couple of notices out date (eg viaduct still brings coal to power station - which is shut/being decommissioned).

Some amazing photos and detail on different sorts of iron and what's been done with it.

We visited here as we had purchased the annual pass, although there were some interesting bits it was very dull. I wouldn't recommend this place unless you have a significant interest in iron...

We enjoyed our visit but my 91 year old mother in law who has cataracts found the reading quite strenous, she would have apprecaited an audio guide. Great site though to follow through the centuries of iron production that made the Industrial Revolution possible, did those Victorians love Iron, my they did..

We dropped in with no expectations and came out two hours later astonished and inspired to find out more. The tour with a guide was well worth it. This whole area holds history in the palm of its hand. Dont miss the view of the red cooling towers rising out of the wooded valley. They are threatening to demolish them which would be a tragedy,

A Museum of Iron? Taking a 10-year-old? Got to be boring, yeah?
Well---this is a wonderful place to visit....
Three floors of the Museum itself, first.
The building itself is beautiful---a reclaimed industrial building with white painted beams and red carpets, all surmounted by an impressive bell- and clock-tower.
Who would believe that so many beautiful things could be made of cast iron? A dining table with beautifully cast full-size deerhounds to support it. Wonderfully decorated benches with ivy and oak leaves entwined. A coffee grinder the size of a modern fridge. And cooking pots of all sizes and types everywhere. And lots more....
Then, the piece de resistance: in the grounds, the remains of the blast furnace that Abraham Darby III enlarged in 1777, from the one originally built by his grandfather, to smelt the iron used to build the Iron Bridge, the first iron bridge in the world.
Here you can feel the history, in this birthplace of the Industrial Revolution...

And my 10-year-old? Well---she loved Enginuity (which is on the same site)...but she was amazed by the old furnace....one learns not to underestimate children and their capacity to appreciate and understand....

Having recently visited his museum on my own, my husband and I returned together as I had been so disappointed with the updated version. On arrival we found that the car parking fee had been increased to a massive £3. Double in a very short time! Ok, if one wants to visit all the museums the ticket is transferable to SOME of the other sites but the entrance fee for this museum is £8.85 (£9.75) if you get caught for gift aid price. So that means the entrance fee would total £11.85! Fortunately we decided to park elsewhere because, when we arrived at the entrance we were informed that the museum would be closing at 2.30 due to staff training. It was then 2.25. This is the second time that we have visited and found it closed although there was NO sign to say closed and last time we had paid to park.
Inside the museum the majority of the beautiful iron work has been removed only to be replaced with LOTS and LOTS of reading on posters around the rooms.
Don't bother visiting. AND sadly, this downgrading reflects the other Ironbridge Gorge museums. I have always recommended these museums to visitors but will not be doing so in the near future. Management..... Get your act together.
